The new 2001 Land Rover Discovery
Sport Utility remains a tall, narrow, boxy-looking vehicle
that is made in England and remains a trendy item in
many circles for its personality, comfortable ride,
and generous cargo volume. It really should be classified
more as a mid-size sport wagon, although its height
gives it more of a truck-like appearance. Three sturdy
models are available, the Land Rover Discovery SD, Land
Rover Discovery LE, and Land Rover Discovery SE, each
with four doors and a seating capacity of seven passengers.
The entry-level Land Rover Discovery
SD Sport Utility packs an eight-cylinder engine center
of vee camshaft, sequential port fuel injection, and
188 horsepower. Transmission is four-speed automatic,
the vehicle is equipped with mud and snow SBR tires,
and drive type is an excellent four-wheel full time
drive for tackling the back roads. Each vehicle has
been fitted with mud and snow SBR tires for extra traction
and grip on any road surface.
In the luxury and convenience departments,
the Land Rover SD Sport Utility is loaded with standards
from air conditioning to cruise/speed control, dual
power mirrors, power door locks, power windows, and
a handy folding rear seat for extra gear. Also included
in the standard package are a theft deterrent system
for peace of mind, limited slip differential, and a
rear wiper to keep the back window clear for optimum
visibility. An AM/FM stereo with CD player controls,
garage door opener, leather-wrapped steering wheel,
cargo cover, and a compass are all basic benefits as
well.
In addition to the rear wiper and
defroster, Land Rover lists safety features such as
ABS brakes, traction control, and child safety locks.
Other standards listed include a driver depowered air
bag, passenger depowered air bag, and both front and
rear head restraints.

The thorough base model package
is upgraded further in the Land Rover LE Sport Utility
with the addition of front fog lights for increased
visibility in adverse weather conditions. A sunroof
is available as an option on this model as well as the
entry-level land Rover Sport Utility model.

Finally, the Land Rover SE Sport
Utility rounds everything out with front fog lights
like the previous model, a sunroof to let in a breeze
