2002 Dodge Dakota

Two additional 2002 Dodge Dakota models—Regular Cab and Club Cab®—are the largest of their kind in the compact class, adding to Dakota’s versatility quotient. Both boast the roomiest and most comfortable front seating areas of their kind in the class.

“While Quad Cab is the natural headline-grabber among Dakotas, we still have a large portion of our customers who don’t require its versatility but still need the capability and value that Dakota delivers,” Julow said. “That’s where the Club and Regular Cab models are so popular.”

A POWER AND CAPABILITY LEADER FROM THE BEGINNING
Since the first Dakota rolled off the assembly line in 1986, it’s been the leader in power and capability. With the widest range of engines and the best towing and hauling numbers in the class, Dakota offers work and performance capability that rival even some full-size pickups.

Dakota offers four powerful Magnum® engines designed to meet the varying needs of the compact buyer, including the only two V-8 engines in the class. At 250 horsepower and 345 lb.-ft. of torque, the 5.9-liter Magnum V-8 is the most powerful engine among all compact offerings. Following close behind is the 230-horsepower, 295 lb.-ft. torque 4.7-liter Magnum V-8 engine. The 3.9-liter Magnum V-6 is the most popular Dakota engine, rated at 175 horsepower and 225 lb.-ft. of torque. And rounding out the engine choices is the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the class, the 2.5-liter Magnum I-4 engine. It provides
120 horsepower and 145 lb.-ft. of torque.

Power and performance meet efficiency with the electronically-controlled 45RFE transmission, which can be coupled to the 4.7-liter engine. This state-of-the-art transmission utilizes a unique dual-ratio second gear to aid in towing, passing and grade-change situations.

For acceleration, the transmission automatically chooses the higher-ratio second gear. The transmission selects the lower-ratio second gear in kick-down mode, providing better power and passing performance over a broad speed range.

By designing the 45RFE transmission and 4.7-liter Magnum engine simultaneously, Dodge Truck engineers were able to refine the flow of power and increase fuel efficiency.

Incorporating optimized gear ratio steps and state-of-the-art features, the 45RFE transmission provides a high level for shift refinement and durability, while reducing unwanted noise, vibration and harshness. The transmission has unique features, such as a tall 3.00:1 first gear ratio that gives the driver better initial acceleration. Real-time driver-adaptive shifting fine tunes the shift pattern to the driver.

Additional four-speed automatic and five-speed manual engines are available on the three other engines.

Dakota’s powerful engines support the segment’s best truck for towing and hauling. Dakota’s 6,650-lb. maximum towing capacity and 2,160-lb. maximum payload capability far exceed its compact competitors.

“We strive to offer the flexibility every prospective Dakota demands for their particular truck needs, and that all begins with the engine choices,” said Frank Klegon, Vice President—Dodge Truck Platform, DaimlerChrysler. “Whether it’s going to be used as a work truck—and put to its ultimate capability limits—or as a daily driver—and pushed to its maximum performance capability—there is an engine and transmission configuration to meet the need.

Dakota is available in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive models and features rack and pinion steering. Standard brakes are a front-disc, rear-drum configuration. An anti-lock braking system is standard in the rear with four-wheel ABS available as an option.

UNMATCHED PERFORMANCE IN A COMPACT—THAT’S DAKOTA R/T
Born from the passion of Dodge Truck engineers and refined on the race track, the Dakota R/T is a performance truck like no other. Now in its fourth year of production, this limited edition Dakota meets the highly unique needs of the performance truck enthusiast and provides yet another image piece for the Dodge brand.

Dakota R/T for 2002 is equipped with a special version of the 5.9-liter Magnum V-8 engine and a large-bore, free-flow exhaust that delivers increased engine performance. The truck’s performance capability is supported with a throaty and powerful-sounding exhaust note.

The 250-horsepower engine is mated to a four-speed transmission, and is supported by massive 255/55x17-inch tires. The Dakota R/T is lowered one inch and features unique suspension tuning and front and rear stabilizer bars for added control. Further enhancing its street truck reputation, Dakota R/T is only offered in two-wheel drive.

All Dakota models are produced at DaimlerChrysler’s “Dodge City” Warren Truck Assembly Plant, in Warren, Michigan.
