2002 Ford Thunderbird
Motoring
excitement returns to Ford showrooms with the introduction
of the all-new 2002 Ford Thunderbird.
"This
car, its style, the statement it makes, the feelings
it evokes – all will make it an icon in its own right,"
says Jim O’Connor, President of Ford Division. "For
those who, like me, really loved the original Thunderbirds,
this moment has been 45 years in the making. We’re all
thrilled that it’s finally here and can hardly wait
to get behind the wheel."
The
introduction of 2002 Ford Thunderbird furthers the No.
1 car sales division’s goal of revitalizing the American
consumer’s interest in cars by offering autos that not
only meet their needs, but also stir their emotions.
The
2002 Ford Focus has made great strides in attracting
younger customers into the Ford showroom while offering
all customers a world-class small car that exceeds expectations
in design, function and performance. The 2002 Thunderbird
builds on that success by adding a true aspirational
car to the lineup. It’s a car that will drive people
into showrooms, if only for a look.
"Our
dealers have been overrun by people interested in buying
their first Thunderbird. The public reaction has been
amazing," says O’Connor. "There is no better advertising
for Ford than having a car like this parked in a showroom
or, better yet, driving down the road."
Ford
officially opened the order banks for the Thunderbird
on Monday, January 8, 2001, the day the car made its
regular production debut at the North American International
Auto Show in Detroit.
Thunderbird
expresses a bold, confident and free feeling delivered
in the form of a dramatically designed, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive,
V-8-powered, convertible roadster – a modern throwback
to another optimistic American era.
The
boldness and confidence are embraced in its design.
Thunderbird contains obvious visual cues that tie it
to the classic cars of the past, but with a decidedly
modern interpretation.
Thunderbird
comes standard
as a convertible and offers an optional removable top
with classic porthole windows. The removable top weighs
83 pounds for easy removal and installation. A secure
pin-and-bolt system at the two front attachment points
and two clamps at the rear connect the removable top
to the car. The two-place interior reflects the exterior
design and the car’s romantic heritage with bold style
combined with the comfort and convenience today’s customers
demand.
It
is in a class by itself as a 107.2-inch wheelbase rear-wheel
drive roadster with a smooth, free-breathing 3.9-liter
V-8 engine.
Ride
and handling are specially tuned and structural braces
under the car enhance the chassis rigidity, giving the
roadster world-class driving dynamics.
