All-New 2OO2 Jeep Liberty: Rugged,

Whether the all-new 2002 Jeep® Liberty is carrying people to the mall or to the mountains, safety always goes along for the ride. Important active and passive safety features provide the protection and peace of mind customers expect from a sport-utility pioneer such as Jeep.

Enhanced Braking System Delivers Durability and Shorter Stopping Distances

Jeep Liberty features several braking system enhancements to deliver even more safety, durability and performance. Since heat is one of the biggest contributors to premature brake wear and loss of braking effectiveness, Liberty brakes were heat-tested in the parched desert of Death Valley, California, and in the grueling stop-and-go rush-hour traffic of Los Angeles. Major improvements over previous brake systems include larger, more robust rotors and drums and greater cooling capacity. The result is reduced brake fade (the loss of braking effectiveness as brakes heat up) and a longer life for Liberty’s brake linings.

An available new, integrated anti-lock braking system (ABS) includes refinements to provide quieter operation and less pedal pulsation. The new ABS includes Electronic Brake Distribu-tion (EBD), which automatically distributes braking forces between the front and rear axles, depending on how they can be used best, and adapts to variations in road surface andvehicle load.

Liberty is even prepared for drivers who want the security of ABS in conventional driving but don’t want it to compromise off-road performance. This system activates when the vehicle is in the four-wheel drive low-range mode and allows for limited wheel lockup as needed, such as when the vehicle is descending steep sand or gravel hills. Liberty’s ABS also is designed to limit false activation on bumpy surfaces, such as at railroad crossings and on the rough “washboard” surfaces of gravel roads.

Standard Next-generation, Multi-stage Front and Available Side Curtain Air Bags Deliver High Level of Protection
Standard next-generation, multi-stage driver and passenger front air bags(a) are designed to activate at different levels, depending on the severity of an impact and whether the occupant is buckled in. This way, low-speed impacts generate less forceful air bag deployment, while high-speed ones, or an unbelted occupant, will trigger the bag’s maximum force.

(a) Certified to federal regulations that allow less forceful front air bags. Always use seat belts. Children 12 and under should always be in a back seat correctly using an infant or child restraint system, or a seat belt that is right for their age and size.

Liberty is the first Jeep vehicle with available side air bag curtains, which offer additional head protection for both front and rear outboard occupants. These air bag curtains, located on each side of the vehicle, deploy from the headliner just above the side windows. The bags are designed to work independently of one another, only deploying on the side required.

Of course, air bags—even those that deploy with less force—are supplemental restraint systems that must be used with properly worn lap and shoulder belts, the primary occupant restraint system, to provide maximum protection in the event of an impact.

The 2002 Jeep Liberty is equipped with a seat belt pretensioner in the driver’s position and constant force retractors for both the driver and front passenger. When an air bag deploys, the pretensioner tightens the seat belt to keep the occupant securely in place. The constant force retractor lets out the belt webbing in a controlled manner when the seat belt is at risk of tightening too firmly and causing an injury.

Liberty represents the first Jeep vehicle to use three-point lap and shoulder belts in the middle rear seat. In addition, Liberty is equipped with the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system for mounting the new generation of aftermarket infant child seats that make it unnecessary to use the seat belt to secure an infant child seat. With the LATCH system, child seats attach directly to the structure of the rear seat, so they are easier to install and more secure.

High-Strength Alloy Steel Construction and New Features
Optimize Occupant Protection
Jeep engineers used the latest computer technology to design, analyze and refine Liberty’s structural framework. Exclusive to Jeep, Liberty’s “uniframe” construction incorporates all of the strength and durability of a body-on-frame construction into a unitized construction. By adding stiffness and rigidity to the structure, they enhanced the ride and strengthened the network of steel beams, rails and pillars that surround and protect occupants. More than 70 percent of the underbody is high-strength steel.

The 2002 Jeep Liberty has a number of new features designed to enhance occupant protection in the event of a collision. The engine cradle’s rear fasteners are designed to give way in a severe frontal impact, which helps dissipate impact energy so it is diverted from the passenger compartment. Underbody rails that run the length of the vehicle are built with high-strength alloy steel and work with other structural components to reduce intrusion into the passenger compartment and help keep the fuel system intact. High-strength steel bodyside components and reinforcements further help to protect drivers and passengers and maintain the shape of the doors in the event of an offset frontal impact.

Together, these structural improvements give additional strength to the roof. The rear gate opening’s reinforcement assembly reduces the amount of crush to the passenger compartment in a rear-end collision. Engineers designed a rear crossmember beam to handle the load of the rear-mounted spare tire in a rear impact. This extra load would be too much for many traditional crossmember designs, so engineers used an ultra-high-strength material. This heat-strengthened and tempered bumper beam is welded to the rear of the underbody rails.

Inside, the 2002 Jeep Liberty provides enhanced features designed to protect occupants including molded, structural foam in the headliner and concealed molded ribs under the pillar trim and shoulder belt turning loop trim.

Available Theft Deterrence Systems Provide Security
and Peace of Mind
The 2002 Jeep Liberty features an available Sentry Key® theft deterrent system, a sophisticated engine immobilizing system that prevents the vehicle from being started with a forged key or by directly connecting the ignition wires. The optional Vehicle Theft Security Alarm

further protects the Liberty from theft by monitoring sensors and switches throughout the vehicle.

In addition to unlocking doors and turning on interior lights, the remote keyless entry system activates the vehicle theft security system, where equipped. Also, a new button on the transmitter opens the liftgate flipper glass and unlocks the swing gate, without unlocking the doors. Owners can program certain preferences—such as unlocking the driver’s door only—through the key fob.

Liberty Drivers Have a Better View of the World
Several improvements give Jeep Liberty drivers a better view of the world—important for both off- and on-highway use. Wipers enhance visibility by clearing far more of the windshield than required by federal safety standards, the result of a computer-designed linkage and 18.7-inch long wiper blades. Not only do folding exterior mirrors hold up better in off-road situations and at car washes, they feature a 25-percent larger glass area than previous Jeep models.

Halogen headlamps provide excellent down-the-road illumination. Fog lamps, mounted in the front fascia, project a wider, taller beam pattern and are generally brighter than competitive lamps.

“These impressive safety features, combined with the performance and durability long associated with Jeep, make Liberty a safe, sound choice for SUV buyers at a competitive price,” said Craig Love, Vice President—Jeep Platform Engineering, DaimlerChrysler.
