2002 Mercedes-Benz S
The new world-class Mercedes-Benz
is a study of precision, luxury, and exquisite German
engineering. There are very few competitors that approach
its upscale quality, and the 2002 S-Class Sedan is no
exception to the traditionally high standards.
This year, four outstanding
models are offered by Mercedes-Benz: S430 Sedan, S500
Sedan, S55 AMG Sedan, and S600 Sedan. Each rear wheel
drive vehicle has plenty of room for five passengers,
with four-door entry.
At the head of the line
up, we are introduced to the Mercedes-Benz S430 Sedan,
loaded with opulent leather seating and detailing, a
premium AM/FM stereo with CD player, and air conditioning.
Other standards include cruise control, a convenient
folding rear seat, power door locks, power windows,
and dual power mirrors.
The list continues with
a theft deterrent system, and a keyless entry system
that is most helpful when youre carrying groceries
or its too cold out to fumble for the door lock.
Finishing off the package with flair is a moonroof/sunroof.
Safety standards for
the Mercedes-Benz S430 Sedan get an honorable mention
for thoroughness. Features range from traction control
to ABS brakes, front fog lights, and both front and
rear head restraints. Inside the cabin is a driver depowered
air bag, passenger depowered air bag, side impact air
bags, and side head protection air bags. The passenger
side air bag is equipped with a cut-off switch.
As for impressive performance,
the specifications outline a vehicle that packs a serious
275 horsepower with its eight-cylinder SOHC engine and
295 lbs-ft of torque. The S430 Sedan is fitted with
all-season SBR tires, and literally floats down the
road.
The engine is so quiet
that you hardly hear it even at full throttle. Standard
transmission is five-speed automatic, shifting gracefully
at just the right moments. Simply a pleasure to drive.

Following in the 2002
line up is the Mercedes-Benz S500 Sedan, which takes
the entire base model package and upgrades performance
to hit 302 horsepower with 339 lbs-ft of torque. You
can feel the difference as the vehicle surges forth
with just that much more power when accelerated aggressively.
Base invoice price: $74,586
Base list price: $80,200
The Mercedes-Benz S55
AMG Sedan spiffs up a few of the comforts and conveniences,
but the major change at this level is again performance.
The eight-cylinder engine has been tuned to produce
355 horsepower and 391 lbs-ft of torque. As well, performance
SBR tires have been added to the package. Subsequently,
what is already a spectacular drive becomes an adventure
on the road with incredible speed and superior handling.
Base invoice price: $92,535
Base list price: $99,500
The most advanced model
in the Mercedes-Benz line up is the S600 Sedan. Along
with a host of upgrades on the interior and exterior,
the S600 Sedan boasts yet another jump in performance
over the previous models. The engine at this level breathes
out 362 horsepower, seemingly with little effort. Combined
with the extensive safety and luxury features, this
is one of the most incredible sedans around today.
Base invoice price: $107,136
Base list price: $115,200
