2002 Toyota RAV4

In a market that is flooded with gas-guzzling, expensive sport utility vehicles that take up too much room in parking spaces, the new 2002 Toyota RAV4 Sport Utility is a refreshing exception to the usual brutish SUV’s on the road today. The RAV4 combines economy with sensibility with quality, reliability, and a simply excellent design. This newest generation of Toyota RAV4 Sport Utility features even more improvements than the previous round of model years.

Two Toyota RAV4 Sport Utility models are offered for 2002, the RAV4 Sport Utility base model and the RAV4 4WD Sport Utility, each with four doors and a seating capacity of five passengers. Toyota increased the length and width of the RAV4, thereby increasing its interior capacity and lending to greater passenger comfort.

Beginning with the entry level Toyota RAV4 Sport Utility, we are introduced to a 2.0-litre 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine with 148 horsepower and 142 lb-ft of torque. Standard transmission is five-speed manual with optional automatic transmission, and drive type is two-wheel front.

You’re not going to be hauling around 20 tonnes of logs from the lumber yard with this thing, but let’s face it - most of us buy SUV’s for going to work in the city, taking the kids to hockey or soccer, and mild-side-of-wild dirt roads on the way to the cottage. Why pay money for anything more than what you really need? And speaking of money, this sport utility checks in at a very respectable 25/31 (city/hwy), putting the competition to shame.

The Toyota RAV4 Sport Utility offers up a variety of standard and optional luxuries so you can build it to suit your requirements and pocketbook. Standard features include a 50/50 split folding rear seat, a collection of cup holders, rear defroster, rear wiper, and steering wheel scope/tilt, and power steering. Options range from air conditioning to keyless entry system, moonroof/sunroof, and a theft deterrent system.

Packages available are listed as cruise/speed control, power door locks, dual power mirrors, power windows, leather seating, and an AM/FM stereo with CD player. Convenient details such as the six cargo area grocery bag hooks and various map pockets and storage compartments come in handy.

Safety features included on each Toyota RAV4 Sport Utility are a driver depowered air bag, passenger depowered air bag, front and rear head restraints, and child safety locks. For additional safety, ABS brakes are available as an important option you should seriously consider, and front fog lights are offered as a package. Each vehicle is equipped with mud and snow SBR tires to grip the road tightly.

Base invoice price: $15,285
Base list price: $16,525

For those of you who have tougher requirements for your new sport utility vehicle, the Toyota RAV4 4WD Sport Utility features four-wheel full-time drive to get you through snow, mud, and more challenging back roads conditions. Limited slip differential has been added to the package as an option to augment performance.

The suspension is the same as the base model and is comprised of an independent MacPherson strut suspension with a stabilizer bar and hydraulic shock absorbers, and double-wishbone coil-spring rear suspension with stabilizer bar and hydraulic shock absorbers. The fuel economy rating for the Toyota RAV4 4WD Sport Utility is estimated at 22/27 (city/hwy).
