2003 Audi A4 1.8T
Audi has two lines of A4s, the 2003 Audi A4 1.8T series
and the 2003 Audi 3.0 series. A 4-cyl turbocharged 1.8-liter
engine distinguishes the 1.8T, described here. The 1.8T
comes as a sedan, the Avant wagon or sporty cabriolet
convertible model. For drivers with a demanding right
foot and who are attracted to the enduring style that
Audi favors, the A4 line has a lot to offer in terms
of performance, comfort and class.
The designers at Audi have made the pot even sweeter
by offering Quattro 4-wheel drive and by making available
the cutting-edge multitronic Continuously Variable Transmission
(CVT). The Audi A4 1.8T is a fierce and successful competitor
in the near-luxury mid-size car class. Consequently,
it enjoys some of the premier innovations and convenience
technologies that Audi has in its extensive closet.
Under the Hood
All the A4 1.8T models are equipped with a turbocharged
dohc in-line 1.8 liter 4-cylinder with 5 valves per
cylinder and hydraulic lifters. It can produce 170 hp
at 5900 rpm166 lb-ft of torque at 1950-5000 rpm. CVT,
an automatic transmission system with manual shift capability,
or a 5-speed manual transmission is available. FrontTrak
front-wheel drive is standard on the 4-door sedan and
the Cabriolet while Quattro AWD is standard on the Avant
wagon and available for the sedan. This engine can do
0-60 in 8.4 seconds, is limited to 130 mph by law in
the US, but is comfortable to drive at that speed and
will reach it pretty quickly on a racetrack. It gets
a very good 23/30 mpg (city/hwy).
A stiff chassis and sophisticated suspension is standard
on the A4 but it real selling point is in its safety
and control technology. Antiskid, antilock disc brakes
and an extensive passive safety roster that includes
standard dual front, front side and curtain side airbags
combine with optional torso protection airbags for back-seat
passengers. In addition, the Cabriolet has a roll-bar
behind the rear seats that pop up automatically in a
rollover situation to protect everyone.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Interior capabilities and configurations naturally vary
somewhat, depending on whether you choose the sedan,
wagon or convertible, but the generous selection of
amenities and comforts is pretty much standard throughout.
The list of standard features includes the following:
air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls,
cruise control, cloth upholstery on front bucket seats,
heated power mirrors and other power features like windows,
door-locks, steering and remote keyless entry and, an
AM/FM stereo with an in-dash 6-CD player.
Optional extras include leather upholstery, seat and
audio system upgrades, a power sunroof and much more.
