2003 Audi A6 Series reviews and buying guide.

2003 Audi A6 Series resources:

2003 Audi A6 Series

A6 4.2, S6 Avant and RS 6
Audi is offering six mid-size luxury cars for the 2003 A6 line: three with V6 engines and three with V8 ones. The V8 list is comprised of the A6 4.2, the S6 Avant Wagon and the RS 6, a limited edition rocket with 450hp that won't be available until the summer of 2003.

The entire A6 family is distinguished by their offering of brawny power, superior performance, interior finery and spaciousness, but the V8 models are particularly endowed with these characteristics. Credible entries to the luxury car class, whether a sedan or wagon, and blessed by an assortment of Audi options and choices, the A6 offers the ultimate in versatility and style.

Under the Hood

The first engine of these three choices is the 4.2-liter V8 found in the A6 4.2. With 300hp at 6200 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 3000, the 5-speed automatic transmission will still get you 17/25 mpg (city/hwy). The S6 Avant engine takes it up a notch. This V8 gets 340 hp at 7000 rpm, even though it is the same size as the 4.2 and it has 310 hp at 3400 rpm, making it a higher-revving powerhouse fully able to maintain the vice-like grip of the Quattro all-wheel drive system. The final engine choice is found in the RS 6, which also enjoys 4.2-liters of displacement, but gets 450 hp at 6500 rpm and 415 lb-ft of torque at 1950.

All these cars have sophisticated power management, handling and control technologies to keep the wheels on the pavement. For example, antiskid and 4-wheel antilock brakes are standard on all models. As for transmissions, the Audi multitronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and FrontTrak front-wheel drive competes with 6-speed manual transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive for consumer satisfaction.

Passive safety equipment includes standard dual front, front side and curtain side airbags combined with optional torso protection airbags for back-seat passengers.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The entire Audi A6 line is fully loaded with plenty of luxuries but this end of the spectrum, from 4.2 to RS 6, surpasses the already high standard set.

The list of standard features, which includes 12-way power front seats, wood trim and leather upholstery, is added to by a memory system that sets driver seat, mirror, steering wheel positions, and climate. The S6 adds even more with heated seats and steering wheel, a power sunroof and a high-powered Bose Audio system.

Options include major packages and stand-alone items.
