2003 Audi A8 Series

A8, A8L and S8
The Audi A8 family contains Audi's largest cars. These are limousine-like vehicles designed to offer the maximum amount of luxury. However, unlike limousines, the Audi A8 models are performance-designed all-wheel drive chameleons that will perform in terrain and/or weather conditions that would leave other full-size sedans in the dirt and needing help.

The three offerings at this level are the 2003 Audi A8, the 2003 Audi A8L, a stretch version with a 5.1-inch longer wheelbase and the 2003 Audi S8, a speedster with bigger muscles and an attitude to match. The A8 family has power, performance, interior finery, plush roominess, and V8 engines.

Under the Hood

The two V8 engine choices in the A8 line are unique and designed for them. The A8 and A8L share the same powertrain configuration. This is a 310hp 4.2-liter V8 with peak power at 6200 rpm and a peak torque of 302 lb-ft achieved at 3000rpm. It is coupled with a 5-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission on a Quattro all-wheel drive platform. The S8 has a more powerful engine and also enjoys a performance sport suspension. Its V8 has 360 hp at 7000 rpm and 317 lb-ft of torque at 3400 rpm.

Despite its size, this car is capable of a lightning 0-60 in 6.7 seconds and despite its high performance level, it will get a surprising 17/25 mpg (city/hwy). This comes partly from efficiency gained by the very light Audi Space Frame (ASF) aluminum alloy frame and body shell construction. It also benefits from the Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP), Servotronic speed-sensitive power rack and pinion steering and gas-charged anti-roll suspension.

Safety features on the A8 line include some state-of-the-art technologies as well. For example, the anti-lock brake system has vacuum power assist and electronic rear brake pressure distribution. Airbags include the Sideguard head protection airbags for front and rear occupants and front airbag systems with dual threshold deployment and front passenger occupant detection. Meanwhile all passengers enjoy 3-point safety belts with pre-tensioning and angle adjustment. To top it off, the rear center armrest has a First Aid Kit inside it.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The A8 has everything. The S8 has everything plus heated front seats, Xenon headlights and 245/45ZR18 tires. The A8L has everything plus heated rear seats, steering wheel, power rear window sunshade and manual rear side sunshades.

Everything means: 14-way power front seats, automatic climate control, wood trim, leather upholstery, a memory system that sets driver seat, mirror, steering wheel positions, and climate, a power sunroof and a high-powered Bose Audio system.

Options include major packages and stand-alone items like OnStar and Navigation.
