2003 BMW 5-Series: 540i, 540iT and M5
The BMW 5-Series has six different vehicles, four sedans
and two wagons. It is also comprised of three powerful
engine choices. The V8 engine models described here
include the 2003 BMW 540i sedan, 2003 BMW 540iT wagon
and the 2003 BMW M5, a powerhouse sports car with outlandish
power and trim levels.
The 5-Series is a mid- luxury car series aimed at a
successful professional demographic and these three
models are the powerhouses of the group. They are designed
for those who see driving as more than just a chore
and who want superior power and handling to be there
to meet their own aggressive road requirements. They
are also specifically aimed at those who appreciate
graceful machinery.
The classic BMW lines make a statement but at the same
time, they offer good value with safety, quality and
reliability the design priorities.
Under the Hood
The BMW 540i and 540iT wagon are both equipped with
a 4.4-liter V8 engine. This produces 290 hp at 5400
rpm and 324 lb-ft of torque at 3600. This engine comes
standard with a 5-speed automatic transmission with
optional manual shift capability but it can be combined
instead with a 6-speed manual. This model also adds
sport bucket seats and sport suspension. It maximizes
acceleration and lends a purer driving feel to the experience
but mileage suffers slightly. This powertrain configuration
achieves 15/23 mpg (city/hwy). The regular AT set-up
manages slightly better 18/24 mpg.
The next level up is found in the M5. This model has
394 hp at 6600 rpm and 368 lb-ft of torque at 3800.
It comes with a 6-speed manual transmission only. It
gets a low 13/21 mpg, as one might expect from a 4.9-liter
V8 designed entirely for power and lots of it.
Sophisticated BMW technological innovation goes into
the 5-Series to support and complement the engine. Traction
control, an antiskid system, 4-wheel antilock disc brake
with brake assist and extensive passive safety details
are in place; dual front, front side and front side
head protection airbags are standard. On the M5, additional
safety is in place including rear torso side and rear
head protection airbags.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Stepping up to the 5-Series means more standard interior
amenities. This is particularly true of the V8 models,
especially the M5. The 540 models have standard air
conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate control,
leather upholstery on 10-way power front bucket and
rear split-fold bench seats, wood trim, rain-sensing
wipers and an automatic day/night rearview mirror. The
M5 adds 16-way power sport seats, a navigation system,
a 6 CD audio system, rear spoiler, heated door locks
and headlight washers, and 245/40ZR18 front and 275/35ZR18
rear tires.
Comprehensive optional packages and stand-alone options
add value and versatility.
