2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD

The 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500HD and 1500SS are two half-ton pickups that push performance to the max. If it's big-time power and workhorse-like capability you require, the 1500HD will provide all that you need. If, on the other hand, you want a half-ton pickup with extreme sport-inspired handling, muscle and style, the 1500SS is right up your alley.

The 1500HD is constructed with the ruggedness of the three-quarter-ton frame. It offers four-door crew cab seating, a short box bed and a powerful V8 engine to do the rough stuff. The 1500SS is basically an extended cab short box bed on steroids. Its engine is the most robust of any 1500-series Silverado, and on top of that is added an exceptional handling system. Both models retain all the toughness and dependability needed to ensure long, fruitful lives, even with the demanding tasks they invite.

Under the Hood

The Silverado 1500HD is equipped with an appropriately muscular 6.0-liter/ 364-cu. in V8 engine with 300 horsepower at 4400rpm and 360lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. Not surprisingly, it is offered in 2WD or 4WD configurations. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes are standard. With a sturdy suspension system and plenty of towing capability, the 1500HD epitomizes the term no-nonsense.

The 1500SS provides even more juice with an LQ9 version of the 6.0-liter V8 found on the 1500HD, providing 345 horsepower at 4400rpm and 380lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. A standard full-time, all-wheel-drive (AWD) viscous-coupled transfer case provides exceptional on-road, wet or dry pavement handling, while an improved high-performance chassis package translates into great cornering ability.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

As both vehicles are capable of seating up to six passengers, they come with enough creature comforts to satisfy whoever's along for the ride. The usual suspects are standard, including air conditioning, power steering, trip computer and more. The SS offers even more features, along with a style package that combines a Dark Charcoal interior and leather bucket seats with special "SS" embroidered headrests and 20-inch aluminum wheels.

Quadrasteer, GM's 4-wheel steering system, is available on the 1500HD. Allowing the rear wheels to turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels, it helps the vehicle make tighter turns, such as when cornering or getting into a tight parking space. Other options packages address performance, style and convenience needs.

For heavy duty work and high-performance sport satisfaction, the 1500HD and 1500SS have all the ability to please even the harshest of critics.
