2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 reviews and buying guide.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 tips the scales at one ton. Needless to say, it is a full-size pickup with plenty of power to back up its substantial girth. The 3500 will pretty much tow, haul or drag whatever needs to be moved, without a lot of fuss. Equipped with a standard hauling and trailerage package and dual rear wheels, there is no question the 3500 is meant for business.

In line with the Silverado credo of versatility, the 3500 comes in a wide variety of versions to satisfy whatever requirements customers have for their pickup needs. There is a two-door regular cab for two-or-three person seating and a four-door extended cab (two rear-hinged back doors) and crew cab (four conventional doors), both capable of seating up to six. The regular cab has an 8.1 ft. long box, while the extended cab and crew cab offer either the long box or a 6.5 ft. short box. 2WD and 4WD configurations are available on all cab sizes, as is a special chassis cab enhancement. There are two models to choose from, LS and uplevel LT (not available on regular cab size).

Under the Hood

The Silverado 3500 has a rough-and-ready 6.0-liter/ 364-cu. inch V8 engine with 300 horsepower at 4400rpm and 360lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. 5-speed manual transmission is standard, while 4-speed and 5-speed automatic and 6-speed manual are optional.

In terms of safety, the Silverado 3500's size alone is enough to protect drivers and passengers in the event of a collision. A power Hydro-boost brake-apply system (four-wheel disc, four-wheel antilock brakes) is there to prevent this from ever happening.

Two optional engines are available across all models. One is an 8.1-liter/ 496-cu. inch V8 with 340 horsepower at 4200rpm and 455lb-ft. of torque at 3200rpm, while the other is a diesel 6.6-liter/ 403-cu. inch V8 with 300 horsepower at 3100rpm and 520lb-ft. of torque at 1800rpm. In other words, there is an ample amount of low-end torque to generate loads of power.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The LS model comes with such standard features as air conditioning with dual-zone manual climate control, power steering, tilt steering wheel and vinyl upholstery. LT models make the big beast seem like a luxury vehicle, with such amenities as the OnStar System, leather upholstery, heated bucket seats and more.

The options packages are varied and impressive. Everything from performance additions to style and comfort adjustments are available with the 2003 Silverado 3500.

One ton of truck is a lot of muscle. Does anything more really need to be said?
