2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Extended Cab and Crew
Cab
The extended cab and crew cab versions of the 2003
Chevrolet Silverado add more seating than the regular
cab, plus a wider variety of engines to choose from
and more comfort features. Both the extended cab and
the crew cab can seat up to six people, almost pushing
the Silverado 1500 into a new class of vehicle. Once
you experience the tough performance and reliability
of this full-size pickup, you'll realize right away
you're dealing with a Chevy Truck
The extended cab and crew cab come in three models:
base, LS and LT. The farther you go up the scale, the
more standard creature comforts you get. The 1500 extended
cab comes in either a 6.5-ft. flare-fender Sportside
Box, a 6.5-ft. Fleetside Short Box, or an 8.1-ft. Fleetside
Long Box, while crew cabs have the Fleetside Short Box.
All 1500s come with 2WD or 4WD options. Along with new
styling and a host of available options packages, the
extended cab and crew cab both offer GM's Quadrasteer
system.
Under the Hood
There are enough engine sizes and engine upgrades with
the extended cab to make your head spin. To begin with,
the extended cab short box offers a 4.3-liter V6 with
200 horsepower. The extended cab long box has a 4.8-liter
V8 with 270 horsepower, and the extended cab sportside
box comes with a 5.3-liter V8 with 300 horsepower. The
crew cab boasts a 6.0-liter V8 with 300 horsepower.
4-speed automatic is the transmission of choice. All
models and sizes have standard 4-wheel antilock disk
brakes and dual front airbags.
As far as engine upgrades go, with the purchase of
the LT model, all extended cabs are given the 5.3-liter
V8 engine. Without the LT, owners can still upgrade
their extended cab engines to the 4.8-liter V8 or the
aforementioned 5.3-liter V8.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The base model is equipped with air-conditioning with
dual-zone manual climate control, trip computer, AM/FM
radio and a host of other features. The LS model turns
up the comfort factor with such things as AM/FM CD player,
carpeting and power everything, while the LT provides
the OnStar system, steering wheel radio controls, a
Bose AM/FM radio w/in-dash 6-disc CD changer and other
goodies.
For options, there are a number of performance packages
for the Silverado 1500, from heavy hauling and towing
upgrades to off-road suspension improvements. Quadrasteer
is available to improve handling. A 4-wheel steering
system, Quadrasteer enables the rear wheels to turn
in the opposite direction of the front wheels, helping
the vehicle make tighter turns, such as when cornering
or getting into a tight parking space.
With more seating than the regular cab, the extended
cab and crew cab can both double as reliable family
vehicles. However, they would be hard-pressed to hide
the fact that underneath it all they are hard-working
Chevy Trucks.
