2003 Ford Escape reviews and buying guide.

2003 Ford Escape resources:

2003 Ford Escape (XLT Edition)

Positioned between the entry-level XLS edition and top-line Limited, the XLT edition offers exceptional comfort along with the standard performance and safety of the Escape line of compact SUVs. Since its debut in 2001, the Escape has appealed to customers shopping for a sporty SUV with an undeniable looks of readiness. Able to take to the trails at a moment's notice, the Escape just as easily merges back on to the paved highway.

Ford offers a wealth of different Escape models to attract a wide demographic of customers. The XLT edition alone comes in four different models: Popular, Popular 2, Sport and Premium. Both Popular models and the Premium model come with two-wheel, front-wheel drive, which provides excellent handling, traction and control, while all-wheel drive is optional. True to its name, the Sport model comes with all-wheel drive standard. With four doors and five-passenger seating, the 2003 Escape also throws roominess into the fray.

Under the Hood

All XLT models have a standard 3.0-liter V6 engine with 201 horsepower at 5900rpm and 196lb-ft of torque at 4700rpm and 4-speed automatic transmission. The full-time four-wheel-drive system provides the driver with the choice of two settings: 4x4 Auto or 4x4 ON. The automatic setting allows the vehicle to determine how to apportion torque between the front and rear wheels, while the 4x4 ON setting splits the torque evenly between the front and rear drive wheels.

The XLT edition steps up the safety. Front fender reinforcement helps direct the energy load of a frontal crash between the lower frame rail and an upper path that goes through the roof, away from occupants. In addition, dual front airbags and antilock brakes are standard.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Escape is designed for maximum comfort, convenience, passenger roominess and cargo flexibility. Escape has four doors and a rear liftgate with flip-up glass for access to the cargo area. The cargo area, with the seats up, offers 33 cubic feet of storage space. Starting with the Popular model moving up the XLT line, owners are given more and more standard equipment.

Extra safety is available with optional front side airbags. For entertainment, XLT owners can upgrade to a sophisticated Mach sound system. New colors for 2003 are Aspen Green Clearcoat Metallic, Red Fire Clearcoat Metallic and Gold Ash Clearcoat Metallic.

The 2003 Ford Escape is an SUV whose youthful nature always seems to rub off on its owners.
