2003 Ford Escape reviews and buying guide.

2003 Ford Escape resources:

2003 Ford Escape (XLS Edition)

The Ford Escape is a small, rugged SUV that provides an adventurous, responsive ride, sharp handling and a stylish interior package. In addition, excellent fuel economy and low emissions combine to make this four-door, five-passenger sport-utility vehicle practical and environmentally responsible.

The Escape is styled for young buyers, or those young at heart. The design delivers a muscular, athletic exterior without an overly aggressive appearance. The Escape has a confidently poised stance with wide body cladding and integrated bumper guards to give it an assured look of off-road readiness. Variety is in abundance with the Escape - a total eight models are offered. The XLS edition occupies the base range, and is offered in three model configurations: Value, Sport and Popular.

Under the Hood

The Value and Sport models of the XLS edition come with a 2.0-liter I4 engine with 127 horsepower at 5400rpm and 135lb-ft of torque at 4500rpm. The Popular models adds more beef with a standard 3.0-liter V6 engine with 201 horsepower at 5900rpm and 196lb-ft of torque at 4700rpm, plus an optional all-wheel drive configuration. The MacPherson strut front suspension helps isolate road forces, while the independent rear suspension allows lower spring rates for a smooth ride.

In terms of safety, the Escape XLS provides front disc and rear drum brakes and dual front airbags. A smooth power rack-and-pinion steering systems results in enhanced feel and allows drivers to maneuver the vehicle out of danger when it arises.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

For 2003, all Escapes have upgraded interior materials for better appearance and feel. The seat fabrics, floor mats and door trim are of higher quality and are available in new patterns and hues. The center stack, door bezels and window switches are painted for a two-tone interior effect, and the window switches are illuminated for nighttime convenience. The Value model provides such features as air conditioning, power steering, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player. Right with the times, the Sport adds an MP3 player to the sound system.

Owners can add extra safety with antilock brakes and front side airbags. A Convenience Group is offered specifically for XLS models, and consists of cruise control, cargo cover and a perimeter alarm system.

Affordable and with all the basics intact, the XLS edition of the 2003 Ford Escape is designed for adventure, but doesn't break the bank.
