2003 Ford Excursion (XLT and XLT Premium Editions)
Quite simply the biggest, meanest SUV on the road,
the Excursion towers above its competition. In terms
of size, the Excursion is a full 7.4 inches longer,
6 inches taller and 2000 lbs. heavier than its closest
rival, the Chevrolet Suburban. Introduced as a 2000
model, the Excursion has the menacing look of rugged
sport utility on the outside with vast storage space
and passenger comfort on the inside. The Excursion was
added to the Ford lineup to address customers' desires
for a heavier-duty SUV with enhanced towing and cargo
capacity.
With a wheelbase of 137.1 inches and three rows of
seating to accommodate up to nine people, it goes without
saying that the Excursion can handle heavy transportation.
The XLT and XLT Premium editions are joined by the new
Eddie Bauer edition and fully loaded Limited edition
in the Excursion family. Comfort and roominess are in
abundance, while customers can satisfy their power needs
with a number of available engines.
Under the Hood
The Excursion is available with two-wheel, rear-wheel
drive or four-wheel drive. With two-wheel drive models,
the standard engine is a powerful 5.4-liter V8 with
255 horsepower at 4500rpm and 350lb-ft of torque at
2500rpm. Four-wheel drive models are equipped with a
massive 6.8-liter V10 with 310 horsepower at 4250rpm
and 425lb-ft of torque at 3250rpm. New shock absorbers
for 2003, coupled with an enhanced suspension system,
smooth out the ride. 4-speed automatic transmission
frees up the driver's hands, while antilock 4-wheel
disc brakes minimize stopping distances.
Available across all Excursion models is a 7.3-liter
Turbodiesel V8 with 250 horsepower at 2600rpm and 525lb-ft
of torque at 1600rpm. Later in the model year, an improved
diesel V8 will be offered. The new, more powerful, cleaner
6.0-liter Power Stroke diesel and new five-speed TorqShift
automatic transmission will combine to make a best-in-class
325 horsepower at 3,300rpm and 550lb-ft of torque at
2,000rpm. It will offer up to 10 percent better fuel
economy and 20 percent lower emissions.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
All nine people inside the Excursion are treated to
a high level of comfort. Some of the standard features
on the XLT model include front and rear air conditioning
with rear climate controls, tilt leather-wrapped steering
wheel, keypad entry, AM/FM/cassette/CD player, roof
rack, 7-lead trailer harness and a Class IV trailer
hitch. The XLT Premium adds, among others, 6-way power
front captain chairs, rear radio controls and a trip
computer.
A six-disc, in-dash CD player is available on all models.
A Rear Seat Entertainment System, including a DVD player
and outputs for games and headphones, is optional on
the XLT Premium.
For transportation with extensive power and roominess,
there isn't much wrong with the 2003 Ford Excursion.
