2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is an innovative vehicle
that basically merges together the design of an SUV
and a pickup truck. The result is a four-door SUV cabin
with a 4-ft-long pickup-truck bed in lieu of an enclosed
cargo area. Its style is athletic and rugged, and its
unique construction provides a widespread set of capabilities.
Versatile is the word that most accurately describes
the Sport Trac. There is enough interior room to seat
five comfortably, while the bed, which measures 50 inches
long and 19.7 inches deep, offers 29.6 cubic feet of
cargo space. Like the best-selling Explorer, the Sport
Trac's engineering rests on a proud tradition. Combining
all the features that have made the Explorer so popular,
including performance, safety and comfort, the Sport
Trac offers that added dimension of convenience made
possible with its design. For 2003, the Sport Trac is
available in three models: XLS, XLT and XLT Premium.
Under the Hood
The engine on the Sport Trac is one perfectly fitted
to handle all the rigors of the day. It is a 4.0-liter
V6 with 203 horsepower at 5200rpm and 237lb-ft of torque
at 3000rpm. When properly equipped, the Explorer Sport
Trac has a 5,300-pound maximum towing capacity. 2WD
and 4WD configurations are both available, as are 5-speed
manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions. Independent
short- and long-arm front suspension offers a combination
of smooth ride and secure handling. The rack-and-pinion
steering system provides good returnability, low steering
effort and communicative road feel.
Safety features have been improved on the 2003 Ford
Explorer Sport Trac. Rear disc brakes replace drums
in the antilock brake configuration. In addition, electronic
rollover sensors provide additional protection by measuring
whether the vehicle is tilting, how fast the lean angle
is changing and whether the combination means the vehicle
might be headed for a rollover.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Sport Trac's interior also shares in the wealth
of 2003 upgrades. Revised low-back buckets seats, a
new door trim and new interior colors give the Sport
Trac a fresh look. The base XLS model offers plenty
of convenience with its features, while the XLT and
XLT Premium naturally add more to the mix. At the top
of the line, the XLT Premium offers such standards as
front-seat power lumbar support, 6-way power driver
seat, rear climate and radio controls and an overhead
console that contains two map/courtesy lights, compass,
outside temperature display and garage door opener storage
bin.
New for 2003 is an Adrenaline package. Add a 485-watt
PioneerTM sound system, new wheels and limited paint
colors to a Sport Trac, and you have a powerful sound
show called the 2003 Adrenalin Edition.
For versatility, few vehicles in the midsize sport-utility
segment offer the type of cargo management that the
Explorer Sport Trac does.
