2003 Ford Explorer Sport
The Ford Explorer Sport is a two-door, four-passenger
version of the larger, best-selling Explorer. Along
with its smaller size, the Explorer Sport also has the
type of features to justify its title. Quick, with precise
handling and a ruggedness that is readily apparent in
its exterior, the Explorer Sport adds a noticeable hint
of aggression for customers who like to use their vehicles
for adventure as much as day-to-day driving.
Underneath the sharp look of the Explorer Sport is
an extremely functional design. Black roof rails fitted
with optional crossbars are stylish and practical, able
to carry up to 100 pounds of cargo. Behind two comfortable
buckets seats is a rear split-bench seat that provides
excellent leg, knee and headroom and can be folded flat
should additional cargo space be needed. With three
models to choose from, XLS, XLT and XLT Premium, there
is enough variety to prevent the line from ever becoming
stagnant.
Under the Hood
The engine on the Explorer Sport gives it the type
of acceleration and power that allows drivers to zip
around town or fly off-road. It is a 4.0-liter V6 with
203 horsepower at 5200rpm and 237lb-ft of torque at
3000rpm. 2WD and 4WD configurations are both available,
as are 5-speed manual and 5-speed automatic transmissions.
The Explorer Sport's smooth, balanced ride is accomplished
by using a two-stage variable-rate taper leaf spring
in the rear. With lighter loads, the Explorer Sport's
longer leaf springs work to keep the ride smooth. To
create a higher spring rate to handle larger, heavier
loads, a second, stiffer leaf contacts with the first
to maintain a pleasant ride.
Safety is a top priority with the Explorer Sport. Along
with its sturdy frame, the Explorer Sport is also given
dual front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Improvements to Explorer Sport's interior for 2003
begin with the seats, which feature a cloth-trimmed
low-back design with adjustable head restraints as standard
equipment. For the first time, heated leather seats
are available with power lumbar support for the driver
and front passenger. In addition, the Explorer Sport
has a standard floor console with two front cup holders,
an open storage bin, two retractable rear cup holders,
removable soft pack and a convenience clip. For more
standard equipment, customers need only follow the model
line up towards maximum convenience.
Limited-slip differential is one of the powertrain
enhancements offered as an option for 2003. For entertainment,
XLT and XLT Premium owners can add a Pioneer AM/FM/cassette/CD
player.
While the Explorer Sport is designed for today's up-and-coming
professionals searching for a vehicle to support an
active lifestyle, it has the stuff to satisfy just about
everyone.
