2003 Ford Explorer (XLS and XLT Editions)
Part of the reason for Explorer's incredible popularity
lies in the vast array of models it offers. The XLS
and XLT editions are just two pieces of a larger puzzle
that has as its goal pure customer satisfaction. Of
course, equally as important are all the features of
the Explorer that merge together to form a fine driving
combination. A quick look at a few of the awards the
Explorer received in 2002 confirms this. Popular Science
gave the Explorer its "Best of What's New"
award and MotorWeek named Explorer its Drivers' Choice
Award for "Best Family Sport-Utility Vehicle."
The Explorer was also recognized by IntelliChoice as
"Best Overall Value of the Year" for 2002
in the Intermediate Sport Utility Class and by Trailer
Boats magazine as Tow Vehicle of the Year.
The Explorer is available with a third-row seat for
a maximum seven-passenger capacity. Key exterior design
elements include simple, rounded forms and sections,
uncluttered body panels and a bold new grille featuring
the familiar egg-crate insert of all Ford SUVs. A fully
integrated rear bumper with a wide shelf and a completely
redesigned liftgate give the rear of the vehicle a cleaner,
finished look. In addition, both XLS and XLT editions
come in special Sport models featuring step bars.
Under the Hood
The standard engine on the Explorer is a 4.0-liter
V6 offering flexible fuel capability and exceptionally
quiet operation. It produces 210 horsepower at 5100rpm
and 254lb-ft of torque at 3700rpm. All XLS and XLT models
have 5-speed automatic transmission and are available
with two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or all-wheel
drive configurations. With its independent rear suspension
and Ford-patented porthole-in-frame design, Explorer
offers excellent ride qualities. The computer-engineered
chassis package features a fully boxed frame for strength
and durability, and unique porthole-in-frame design
to maximize interior space without sacrificing frame
strength.
Owners of XLT editions can upgrade to a 4.6-liter V8
with 239 horsepower at 4750rpm and 282lb-ft of torque
at 4000rpm. For safety, both editions come with dual
front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The design of the Explorer provides clever storage
features that include water bottle holders in the front
door pockets, and a Cargo Management System with two
underfloor storage bins in the five-passenger model,
one in the seven-passenger model, to keep small items
out of sight. While the XLS and XLT editions comprise
the entry-level positions in the Explorer lineup, they
still offer a wide variety of conveniences for the ride.
A Rear Seat Entertainment System, including a DVD player
and outputs for games and headphones, is an option on
XLT edition models that will entertain passengers for
hours.
The XLS and XLT editions lay down the solid foundation
of the Ford Explorer, ensuring another year of dominance
in the midsize SUV market
