2003 Ford F-250 and the 2003 Ford F-350
The Ford Super Duty full size pickup line includes the
2003 Ford F-250, a ¾ ton model, and the 2003
Ford F-350, a beefier 1-ton. These two trucks have three
trim levels, XL, XLT and Lariat. A variety of Cab sizes
are available, including the 2-dr Regular Cab, the SuperCab
with rear-hinged doors and a folding rear bench seat,
and finally, the SuperCrew Cab, with full back seats
and fully independent opening front-hinged rear doors.
The 'short' bed is 6.75 ft long while the 'long' bed
is 8 ft.
In the pick-up class there is no longer a clear distinction
between work-related and personal use vehicles. With
the growing percentage of people buying for themselves,
an effort has been made to make the interiors of these
trucks much more comfortable. This great choice range
in standard equipment means a new owner can choose between
practical business-like vehicles and full-on luxury
rides at the other end of the spectrum.
Under the Hood
There are three engines to choose from for the F-250
and F-350. Standard equipment is the 5.4-liter overhead
cam V8 has 260 hp @ 4500 rpm and is capable of 350 lb-ft
of torque at 2500. The next level of power is a 6.8-liter
V10. It offers 50 more hp and 75 more lb-ft of torque.
At the top of the power options is the 7.3-liter turbodiesel
V8. The pulling powerhouse of the three, it has only
250 hp but it finds it at 2600 rpm and it is actually
capable of 505 lb-ft of torque at 1600 rpm.
The diesel V8 has a 6-speed manual transmission and
a power takeoff feature that is optional on the other
two models. 4-speed automatic transmissions are also
available and dual front airbags and 4-wheel antilock
disc brakes are standard features. Upcoming for the
model year is an all-new 6.0-liter diesel engine. This
cleaner Power Stroke motor has a five-speed TorqShift
automatic transmission that is going to be a best-in-class
325 hp at 3300 rpm and a whopping 550 lb-ft of torque
at 2000 rpm.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The three trims are consistent whether you buy the
250/350 Regular Cab, SuperCab or SuperCrew Cab. With
an AM/FM radio, power steering, vinyl front bench seat,
folding rear bench seat (SuperCab, crew cab), tachometer,
intermittent wipers, roof clearance lights and a 7-wire
trailer harness, the XL is a basic and practical truck
with a focus on work.
An upgrade to the XLT adds cruise control, air conditioning,
power mirrors, windows and door locks, cloth upholstery
on a 40/20/40 split bench seat, CD player, carpeting
and more. Finally, at the top of the heap is the Lariat
Edition. Leather upholstery is standard on the Lariat
as is the 6-way power driver seat, leather-wrapped steering
wheel, remote keyless entry, overhead console with compass,
outside temp and trip computer. Other important features
include fog lights, chrome bumpers, alloy wheels, and
on 4WD models, manually locking hubs and a 2-speed transfer
case.
Options add-ons include camper packages with stabilizer
bars and snowplow packages.
