2003 Ford Ranger XLT reviews and buying guide.

2003 Ford Ranger XLT

At the top of the Ford Ranger line is the Ford Ranger XLT and its two off-road versions; the XLT FX4 and its big brother, the XLT FX4 Level II. These are some serious trucks. The FX4 Level II is built for hardcore recreational off-road and it shows in the equipment list: Bilstein Shocks and 31x10.5R15 tires top the list.

In short, these are trucks built for and aimed towards the Tim Tool Man Tailor guys and gals who want more power and a classy rig to show it off with. For this reason, the standard features are generous and the engine choices pump out enough torque for a vehicle twice the size. Choose between Regular Cab or SuperCab, which has rear-hinged rear doors and rear jump seats.

Under the Hood

The 2-door Regular Cab XLT actually comes with a choice of three different engines available for the Ranger series. Choose either the 2.3-liter 4-cyl capable of 143 hp at 5250 rpm and 154 lb-ft of torque at 3750 or upgrade to the 3.0-liter V6 with its 154 hp, a small increase on the 4-cyl. The difference really shows in the 180 lb-ft of torque, significantly more than the smaller engine. The 4.0-liter V6 engine, the largest available on the Ranger, has 207 hp and 238 lb-ft of torque at 3000rpm. The V6 get approximately 19/22 or 17/22 mpg, depending on whether you choose the manual or automatic 5-speed transmission. The Rangers all come with dual front airbags and antilock brakes.

As soon as you get into 4WD models of XLT add a 2-speed transfer case and a raised ride-height. Save your lift kit money. Also standard are heavy-duty shock absorbers, and 245/75R15 all-terrain tires around alloy rims. The FX4's come with limited slip differentials, skid plates and, on the FX4 Level II, the Bilstein Shocks and fat tires.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Ranger XLT 2.3-liter comes with AM/FM/CD player and cloth upholstery but, from the 3.0-liter on up, these are joined by cruise control, tilt leather-wrapped steering and chrome steel wheels. Upgrade to the SuperCab with the optional appearance group and power windows, doors, mirrors and remote keyless entry are added.

The higher-end models have front bucket seats, a Class-3 trailer hitch, alloy wheels and an assortment of other mechanical and stylistic possibilities determined by Cab size and whether it is 2 or 4WD. Examples of these include step bars or front and rear tow-hooks.

Air conditioning is an optional extra as are an assortment of mechanical upgrades. Different bed styles and accessories are also available.
