2003 Ford Taurus
The 2003 Ford Taurus is the biggest selling midsize
car offering from this manufacturer. As such, and as
is fairly typical of Ford, they have diversified the
basic formula and made the Taurus available as either
a Sedan or a Wagon. A couple of different engines are
available from a 155 hp overhead valve model to a dohc
V6 that is capable of just over 200 hp.
Either engine has ample power to meet and break the
speed limit anywhere in North America and those with
a lead foot out there will not be disappointed by the
response of the Taurus. It has good marks for road handling
and is amply powered for most legal uses.
The Taurus models include LX, SE, SES and SEL but each
of these has some variations within them, for example,
standard deluxe and limited.
Under the Hood
The Base Taurus has a 3.0-liter V6 that, at 4900 rpm,
puts out 155 hp and, at 3900 rpm, produces 185 lb-ft
of torque. It rates at 20/28 mpg (city/hwy). The duel
overhead cam V6, also a 3.0-liter, is capable of 200
hp at 5650 and 200 lb-ft at 4400. It has very similar
mileage ratings with 20/27. It is standard equipment
on the SE Deluxe Wagon and up, through the rest of the
models. Both these engines come with a 4-speed automatic
transmission.
All Tauruses come with dual-front airbags and, from
the SE up, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes are also standard
equipment. On the SEL Premium, the top trim level, traction
control and front side airbags are standard.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
A key thing to be aware of is the rising trim levels
for the Ford Taurus, whether the Wagon or the Sedan.
Base is followed by Standard, which is followed by Deluxe
and Premium and each have a different selection of standard
features.
However, as Ford's most popular mid-size car, it isn't
a surprise that the basic Taurus is well appointed.
By the time you get to the SEL Premium it is really
loaded with luxuries. For example, highlights include,
automatic climate control, cruise control, power everything
including pedal adjustment, 6-disc CD changer, leather-wrapped
steering wheel, keypad entry, power seat adjustments
and much more.
If you want to delve into the options, significant
ones are items like all-leather upholstery, power sunroof,
sound system upgrades, and even a rear spoiler. Packages
allow the selection of a few in one package; potentially
saving money over buying each individually.
