For 2003, GM's exclusive Quadrasteer four-wheel-steering,
already standard on Denali and available on other extended
cabs, is now also optional on the 1500HD. The electromechanical
Quadrasteer system turns the rear wheels in relation
to the front wheels for unmatched low-speed maneuverability
and high-speed stability and control. In addition to
a new braking system and a number of powertrain enhancements,
Quadrasteer simply adds to the 1500HD's already renowned
heavy-duty working capabilities.
Like the crew cab, the 1500HD is given four full doors,
resulting in five or six-passenger seating. The 1500HD
is available in 2WD or 4WD configurations, providing
owners with a significant measure of flexibility. In
terms of cargo space, the 1500HD comes with a 6.5-ft.
flush-fender Fleetside box. There is a base SLE model
and a loaded SLT model that comes with more standard
features. But whichever model is chosen, the same sturdy
1500HD construction will be there.
Under the Hood
The 1500HD is built for work, and the engine under
its hood shows how. It is a Vortec 6.0-liter V8 with
300 horsepower at 4400rpm and 360lb-ft of torque at
4000rpm. With all this power, the result is a maximum
trailer weight of 10,200 lbs. 4-speed automatic transmission
is standard.
For safety, manufacturers of the 2003 Sierra 1500HD
have enhanced the truck's brakes. The result is a vacuum
boost power, four-wheel disc, four-wheel antilock brake
system with Dynamic Rear Proportioning. A front-seat
dual-level airbag configuration is a supplemental restraint
system designed to detect vehicle deceleration and,
based on the deceleration data, provide an appropriate
amount of air-bag inflation.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Heavy-duty work is what the 1500HD takes care of on
the outside, while generous comfort is what driver and
passengers experience on the inside. The base SLE model
takes care of the essentials, while the SLT naturally
adds a few touch-ups for added convenience. One of the
standard features across all models is the redesigned
instrument panel, which features new trim plates, International
Standardization Organization (ISO) symbols replacing
text, new switch controls and a more functional instrument
panel (IP) cluster.
For entertainment, the 1500HD offers an optional Panasonic
DVD Passenger Entertainment System, with a DVD player
and 7-inch flip-down screen. Also included are two sets
of wireless (infrared) headphones with independent volume
control, a wireless remote control and three sets of
auxiliary video and audio inputs.
For work or play, the 1500HD isn't given its heavy-duty
title without reason.
