2003 GMC Sierra 3500
For 2003, cleaner, more efficient engines, a smarter
electronics system, a redesigned interior and more infotainment
options substantially improve upon last year's 3500
model. What remains is the GMC trademark toughness and
all the brawn that comes with a one-ton pickup truck.
Sporting dual-wheels, the 3500 has that added quality
of supreme traction control, a suitable feature for
the type of work the vehicle was constructed for.
The 3500 regular cab has two doors and seats two or
three, while the extended cab comes with dual rear-hinged
back doors that do not open independently of the front
doors and a passenger rear bench seat, resulting in
up to six-passenger seating. The 3500 regular cab and
extended cab are available in 2WD or 4WD configurations.
Both cab sizes come with a long 8.1-ft. bed that amounts
to 70.7 cu. ft. of bed space. There are three models
to choose from: SL, SLE and SLT (extended cab only).
As if that isn't enough selection, two engine upgrades
are available as well.
Under the Hood
As with the entire heavy-duty Sierra lineup, the standard
engine on 3500s is a Vortec 6.0-liter/ 364-cu. inch
V8 with 300 horsepower at 4400rpm and 360lb-ft of torque
at 4000rpm. 5-speed manual transmission is standard,
but 4-speed automatic, 5-speed automatic and 6-speed
standard are all available. Safety is handled by a power,
HydroBoost brake apply system with four-wheel disc,
four-wheel antilock brakes. Also standard are dual front
airbags and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for
Children) system for child seats.
One of the two available engines customers can opt
to have with their 3500 is a Vortec 8.1-liter/ 496-cu.
inch V8 with 340 horsepower at 4200rpm and 455lb-ft
of torque at 3200rpm. The other is a Duramax 6.6-liter/
403-cu. inch diesel V8 with 300 horsepower at 3000rpm
and 520lb-ft of torque at 1800rpm. Both provide even
more power than the already strong standard V8.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Comfort is addressed with redesigned seats featuring
new sew styles, sculpted contours, a more tailored appearance
and thicker front-seat headrests. A redesigned instrument
panel and a fully integrated, multiplexed electrical
architecture increases the Sierra's processing power.
Starting with the SL model and moving up to the SLT,
the 3500 offers more and more standard features. Front
seats with independently heated backs and cushions (three
temperature settings) is one of the ways that the SLT
pampers its occupants.
Eight-button steering wheel controls are optional on
both the regular cab and extended cab. With these in
place, everything is at the driver's fingertips, including
a button for the optional OnStar system.
Depending on your seating needs, the Sierra 3500 regular
cab or the extended cab will be able to take care of
the rest.
