2003 Honda Pilot
The 2003 Honda Pilot is a new this year mid-size SUV
that replaces the old Honda Passport. Honda's reputation
for build quality and value is echoed in this roomy
and competent 8-seater (5 adults). Visibility is also
a strong point for both the LX and the upgraded EX models.
The mechanical profile is that of a good off-road performer
with reasonable gas mileage and comfort for the family
who needs to get around the urban jungle. Standard features
are generous on both while optional features are available
to suit most demands for luxury and gadgetry.
Under the Hood
The All Wheel Drive Pilot has a standard V6 engine
with 5-speed automatic transmission that gets 17 mpg
in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. 240 hp provides
ample power for most purposes at 5400 rpm while the
242 ft-lbs of torque @ 4500 rpm means that power is
available when you need it. If you are in a hurry, the
Pilot will get you from 0 to 60 in 7.9 seconds and it
also has the power to pass fast at highway speeds. The
engine has 3.5-liters or 212 cu in. of displacement.
Traction control is a standard feature, as is a locking
rear differential that counters spinning wheels in adverse
conditions. Other drivability safety features include
4-wheel anti-lock brakes and both dual-front and front-side
airbags.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
When it comes to standard features, the LX offers the
basic selection one comes to expect from vehicles in
this class. The following itemizes the highlights: a
theft-deterrent system; power steering, windows, mirrors
and door locks; cruise control; AM/FM/CD player; outside
temperature gauge; and various wiper and interior lighting
features.
However, upgrade to the EX and you get all these basics
and more. Standard on the EX is an power driver seat
with 8-way adjustment, remote keyless entry, steering-wheel
stereo controls, automatic climate control, universal
garage-door opener and automatic-off headlights, while
alloy wheels, roof-rails and rear privacy glass are
exterior differences.
Options available for the EX include the following:
a rear entertainment system with DVD, remote control
and headphone jacks; leather upholstery; and a navigation
system. A final innovative option is a rear-view camera
that displays on the navigation screen.
The short version is that this versatile SUV has a
lot to offer the vehicle owner who needs a multi-purpose
vehicle for a broad range of road conditions.
