2003 Hyundai Sonata
The Hyundai Sonata is one of the best-equipped cars
in its segment and is engineered to be reliable, enjoyable
to drive and appealing to the eye. Economically priced,
the Sonata still features a styling that reflects the
luxury look of much pricier models. For 2003, the new
Sonata is enhanced inside and out, resulting in an even
more appealing package than last year.
The Sonata has a muscular look that underlies its sporty
demeanor. Its four-door, five-passenger body is offered
in three trim levels: base, GLS and LX. Safety is just
one feature that is thoroughly addressed across all
models, as the Sonata has five star rating for rollover
resistance.
Under the Hood
The base trim level comes with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder
engine. It produces 138 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 147
lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. 5-speed manual transmission
is standard, though 4-speed automatic is available as
well. Both transmission types receive a nice fuel rating
of 22/30 mpg (city/hwy). GLS and LX models are equipped
with a 2.7-liter V6 engine (optional with base models).
It generates 170 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 181 lb-ft
of torque at 4000 rpm. As with the 2.4-liter, both 5-speed
manual and 4-speed automatic transmission can be mated
to this engine. Manuals get 20/27 mpg (city/hwy); automatics
get 19/27 (city/hwy).
The Sonata's smooth ride comes from its fully independent
suspension system with front and rear stabilizer bars.
Easy handling is made possible with speed-sensitive
power steering. For safety, all Sonatas have dual front
and side airbags. Antilock brakes are optional.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Starting from the base trim and moving up to the top-line
LX model gets you more and more standard features. The
base begins with air conditioning, power windows, mirrors
and door locks, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD player,
remote keyless entry with an alarm, a center storage
console and more. The mid-level GLS adds woodgrain trim,
carpeted floormats, 16-inch aluminum wheels, a power
antenna and heated dual power mirrors. The LX is further
decked out with additional goodies including leather
seating and an automatic temperature control system.
An optional moonroof with power sliding glass is available
on all Sonata models. It is designed for open-air enjoyment
or protected open view pleasure.
The 2003 Hyundai Sonata is similar to other classy
midsize sedans in many respects except one: the price
tag.
