2003 Jaguar XK-Series
The 2003 Jaguar XK Series are the sportiest offerings
from this British luxury car manufacturer. Two models
are available in this line, the 2003 Jaguar XK8 and
the 2003 Jaguar XKR, both of which have had changes
for this year.
Revised styling details inside and out provide a subtle
variation on the existing classic styling, but under
the skin it is a very different story. Larger, more
powerful 4.2-litre V8 engines significantly increase
the performance of the XK. With a focus on safety, comfort
and drivability, an assortment of enhanced electronic
and other equipment options make the 2003 XKs even better
to drive than the originals. XK8 and the supercharged
XKR are both available as either a convertible or 2-door
sporty coupe.
Under the Hood
Not surprisingly, with the sportiest car from one of
the most prestigious auto-manufacturers in the world.
The performance profile is very exciting, starting with
the naturally aspirated XK8s V8 engine. This 4.2-litre
has 300hp and 310lb-ft of torque capable of pushing
it to 60mph in 6.1 seconds. The supercharged XKR, on
the other hand, has the same 4.2-liter V8 but it pumps
out a whopping 400hp and a beefy 408lb-ft of torque
that will propel you through 60mph in 5.3 seconds! Maximum
speed on all XK models remains electronically limited
to 155mph (250km/h).
Both these engines evolved from the 4.0-liter AJ-V8
but the larger capacity and subsequent increase in power
and torque make the performance of the XK even more
scintillating. The six-speed automatic transmission,
built by ZF, is a state-of-the-art, electronically-controlled
stepped system (as opposed to CVT) that
made its Jaguar debut in the new S-TYPE R.
Naturally, with all this power, safety is a major design
priority for Jaguar in the XK Series and the resultant
airbag and driving control technology is on the leading
edge. Emergency Brake Assist and Traction Control are
complemented by Dynamic Stability Control while Adaptive
Cruise Control (ACC), with Forward Alert, can be set
to keep the new XK at any required pace, slowing or
speeding up the car to maintain a set speed and distance
behind the car in front. Highlights of Jaguars Advance
Restraint Technology System (ARTS) include sensors that
determine the size and position of the passengers and
regulate the airbag inflation process accordingly.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Naturally, the interior is fitted with a level of luxury
that should satisfy the most discerning tastes. Highlights
are 12-way powered, heated stitched leather seats, a
DVD-based satellite navigation system, a Premium Alpine
6 CD-changer Sound system with 9 speakers and 320 watts
of power, a dual-band telephone in the armrest and a
valet-key system, which locks out trunk
and interior compartment access to provide added security.
All these amenities combine with serious attention to
classic interior styling to make for a classic blend
of true sports car and luxurious grand tourer.
