2003 Land Rover Freelander
The 2003 Land Rover Freelander is the little brother
in the Land Rover SUV stable. With a removable hardback
the open air 3-door Freelander has the growing appreciation
of the North American marketplace consumer. Europeans
have bought more Freelanders than any other SUV. Being
smaller than the Discovery or the Freelander, the Freelander
has greater urban versatility for the tight parking
and road requirements that so many people face.
However, the Freelander is by no means small, in heart,
cargo carrying capacity or power. The V6 engine and
the advanced performance technology that complements
it combine to make a beefy and responsive vehicle with
plenty of available all-wheel drive power throughout
the engine’s range.
This compact sport utility vehicle comes in base S,
mid-range SE, and top-level HSE models.
Under the Hood
The Freelander’s power comes from adohc 2.5-liter,
V6 engine with 174-hp at 6250 and peak torque of 177lb-ft
at 4000rpm. The five-speed electronically controlled
automatic transmission comes withCommandShift, a Land
Rover innovation that gives drivers the choice of fully
automatic or "manual" shifting. City/Highway
fuel economy figures are 17/21 mpg, respectively.
A sophisticated viscous coupling unit (VCU) and four-wheel
electronic traction control (4ETC) are at the heart
of the go-anywhere, do-anything all-wheel drive system.
An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is also standard
and it combines with Hill Descent Control (HDC) that
acts in place of Low Range gearing, assuring safe travel
on steep, stony slopes. A Lower Anchor and Tether for
Children (Latch) system and an extensive airbag system
both contribute to the Land Rover’s safety and control
technology portfolio.
Standard Features, Options Packages
and Style
The Freelander is aimed at a lower cost range demographic
but it has not been starved for interior amenities.
With a competitive offering of fixtures even at the
base S trim level, the Freelander will not disappoint
the consumer’s desire for comfort. Standard equipment
at this level includes such highlights as air conditioning,
cruise control, an AM/FM/CD player, power windows, door
locks, and mirrors, and much more.
SE adds leather upholstery, amongst other things, while
the HSE adds everything else; premium HarmonKardon audio,
satellite navigation and a power sunroof. Finally, optional
add-ons allow prospective owners to add desired details
to all level of Freelander.
