2003 Mazda Tribute reviews and buying guide.

2003 Mazda Tribute resources:

2003 Mazda Tribute

Mazda's SUV offering for 2003 is the Tribute, a powerful, versatile and safety oriented vehicle in line with the companies Zoom-Zoom image. The plan at Mazda is to design vehicles that appeal to the drivers out there. Regardless of whether you buy a Mazda MPV minivan or a Tribute SUV, you are meant to feel as though you own something that is a sports car at heart; a goal is achieved through both innovative suspension and engine design.

The SUV gets great reviews for cargo room and has a large number of standard amenities and optional add-ons for particular consumer needs. The Tribute comes in a base DX, LX or top-level ES model.

Under the Hood

The Mazda Tribute has a couple of engine choices. The base DX comes with a 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cyl capable of 130 hp at 5400rpm and 135lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. This smaller and less powerful engine gets pretty good fuel economy for the class with 22/26mpg.

However, the LX and ES both come with a beefy 3.0-liter DOHC V6 with 200 hp and 200lb-ft of torque. This is where the Zoom-Zoom comes in. But, it is not all about power. Roadholding, off-road performance and moment-to-moment ride comfort are dependant upon a few important factors. Front strut and rear multi-link independent suspension provide a balance of spirited handling and ride comfort while the Tribute's front roll center is lower than its rear roll center, yielding exceptional steering feel resulting in less body roll than conventional sport utility vehicles.

The Tribute comes with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive but Rotary Blade Coupling is an optional four-wheel-drive system that can give it an all-road, all-weather capability. Ventilated front disc brakes and rear drums are standard, and a four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBFD) is standard on the ES-V6 and an option for the LX-V6.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The majority of interior trim features are included on the base DX model. Highlights include front air conditioning, cloth upholstery, tilt steering wheel, AM/FM/CD player and more. Power features like the windows, mirrors, door locks, steering and remote keyless entry are all controlled at the touch of a button and assorted other amenities are also included. Externally, at this level, a roof rack and rear privacy glass add value.

By the time you get to the top-level ES, add leather upholstery, 6-way power driver seat, leather wrapped steering wheel and cruise control. The options list is extensive with items like a power sunroof, DVD player, MP3 player and much more.
