2003 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Mercedes has the C-Class for entry-level performance
and amenity, the E-Class for mid-level, the CL-Class
for Coupe Luxury at the top end of the scale and the
S-Class, its Sedan counterpart. Top of the line full-size
Sedans, these are high-powered, technologically advanced
and always luxurious cars. The differences between them
lie mostly under the hood, where state-of-the-art engines
offer a range of different capabilities.
The Mercedes S-Class goes from the S430 to the S500,
the S55 AMG and ending in the S600 with its 36-valve
twin-turbo V12powerplant.
Under the Hood
These three Sedans are all about luxury but luxury
within an exquisitely tuned and designed racing car’s
specifications. Even the least powered S430 has a 24-valve
V8 with 275 hp and 295lb-ft of torque. One step up brings
on the S500, a 4MATIC all-wheel drive compatible vehicle
with a V8 that pumps out 302 hp at 5600 rpm and 339
ft-lbs at 2700 rpm. It will do 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds
and has the innovation to make it the easiest car on
the road to drive.
The S55 AMG is an even more powerful Sedan, largely
due to its AMG built engine: a supercharged 5.4-liter\
322-cubic inchohc V8 with 493hp at 6100 rpm. This incredible
power comes from the 516 ft-lbs of torque it produces
at 2650 rpm. Finally, for the price of a small house,
the top of the Mercedes Sedan line, the S600, with the
most powerful engine that Mercedes produces coupled
with the most advanced handling and control technology.
It has a 36 valve 5.5-liter V12 engine capable of 493
hp at 5000rpm and 590lb-ft of torque from 1800 to 3500
rpm.
The driver-adaptive electronic 5-speed automatic Touch
Shift transmission adds to the driving experience with
racing-like one-touch shifting while Optimum Gear allows
changes in gearing to provide maximum performance in
adverse conditions. That’s not all though, the Electronic
Stability Program and Active Body Control combine with
an extensive airbag system to give the ultimate in traction
and lean controls while also protecting occupants.
Standard Features, Options Packages
and Style
S-Class features and options are luxurious to the extreme.
Interior amenities include 10-way power bucket seats,
automatic climate control, navigation and trip computer,
an AM/FM/CD player with controls on the leather-wrapped
steering wheel, and cruise control with a "Distronic"
radar system that maintains a constant distance between
you and the car in front! Leather upholstery, wood-trim,
and classic styling inside and out top off the offering.
Options include the HarmonKardon audio system upgrade,
Xenon dual-beam headlights, "Keyless Go",
the Motorola V60 hands-free phone and much more.
