2003 Mercury Grand Marquis

The 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis is available this year in a variety of different models to vie for position in the full-size car class. GS and LS models are the basic types with Premium, Ultimate and LSE editions available for increasing levels of luxury or sports features.

New this year, the 2003 Grand Marquis Marauder, a hot-rod design, is reminiscent of muscle cars from days gone by.

Under the Hood

A base selection of attributes is had in the GS Model. This vehicle has a 4-speed automatic transmission that manages a beefy 220 hp 4.6-liter ohc V8. This model has traction control, dual-front airbags and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes. An upgrade to the GS Convenience edition offers power-adjustable pedals, while the LS Ultimate adds load-leveling rear air suspension to drivability.

A move to the LSE Edition has all of the above but adds an extra 19 hp to the engine (239 hp @ 4900 rpm-287 lb-ft of torque at 4100 rpm). Also added to the recipe are a sport suspension and higher-rated tires (225/60TR16).

The top level though, is the Marauder. This powerhouse jumps to 302 hp @ 5750 rpm, boasts 310 lb-ft of torque at 4300 rpm, and has a limited slip differential to reduce tire spin on take-off. It also has a center-console floor shifter, tachometer, and still further upgraded suspension and tires (235/50R18 front and 245/55R18 rear). Front-side airbags are also standard on the Marauder Edition.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

A good package of standard features is offered at the base level with additional add-ons at each level of upgrade. The GS is equipped with the following; a theft-deterrent system, split-bench power front driver seat with lumbar adjustment, A/C, AM/FM/Cassette and CD player, power everything and many other details, such as remote fuel door release. Wheel covers and whitewall tires round out the external apopearance.

Upgrading to LS Premium means additions and styling changes including electronic instruments, climate control, passenger seat power, remote keyless entry, universal garage-door opener, automatic day/night mirror and more, while the LSE goes even further, with leather upholstery and, in the interests of sport driving, a return to analog instruments. At the top sport level, the Marauder has front bucket seats, fog lights, polished alloy wheels and everything else listed on this page.

Optional add-ons for these various models include great flexibility to add specific upgrades not standard on the model you are buying, such as a 6-CD changer, leather upholstery or front-side airbags for the LS or LSE editions. Finally, a power sunroof can be installed in the Marauder to top off the cruising experience.
