2003 Mitsubishi Galant reviews and buying guide.

2003 Mitsubishi Galant resources:

2003 Mitsubishi Galant

At the core of the Mitsubishi line is the Galant, a front-wheel drive compact sedan with basic styling, reliability, value and comfort as design priorities. Clearly, this winning combination is winning adherents, as the Galant is a big commercial success in North America.

Part of the reason for this success lies in the Galant model versatility. This car comes in four trim levels and has two engines on offer. This means the gap between the capabilities of the base 4-cyl DE and the top-level GTZ V6 is a big one. Other performance enhancing technology supports the V6 models as well. The Galant runs through 4-cyl DE, ES and LS models and then has V6 versions available that include the ES, LS and GTZ trim levels.

Under the Hood

The 4-cyl is a 2.4-liter overhead cam engine with 140 hp at 5500 rpm and 155 lb-ft of torque at 4000. It is teamed with a 4-speed automatic transmission and gets 21/28 mpg (city/hwy). The V6 is a different story. 3.0-liters of engine displacement puts out 195 hp and 205 lb-ft of torque. All this power doesn't cost too much in the fuel economy department with 20/27 mpg.

The different trim-levels have different performance, safety and control components equipped as standard. For example, all models have dual-front airbags but 4-wheel disc brakes aren't standard until you add a V6 engine. Antilock brakes and front-side airbags don't come on board until the LS trim level and 4-wheel antilock disc brakes aren't added until you jump into the LS V6, which also has traction control. Finally, at the GTZ level, sport suspension and a rear spoiler are added.

Options packages allow the addition of ABS, or a whole "All-Weather" package, which includes ABS and traction control, to the ES model.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Mitsubishi Galant line, like the Lancer, is designed to be both accessible to those on a limited budget but still have trim levels that would appeal to those looking for more luxury. Nevertheless, they offer a pretty solid collection of standard amenities on the base DE model. Standard equipped interior amenities are as follows: air conditioning, AM/FM/CD player, power windows, doors, and steering plus front bucket seats with a height-adjustable driver seat.

The ES adds remote keyless entry, cruise control, variable-intermittent wipers and a trunk pass-through on the inside and fog-lights on the outside. LS adds power driver seat height and lumbar adjustment, a power sunroof and the Infinity audio system. At the top level GTZ, leather upholstery with a 12-way power driver seat and heated power mirrors top off the luxury amenities list.
