2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport reviews and buying guide.

2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport resources:

2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport

Mitsubishi has produced the mid-size sport utility vehicle, the 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Sport this year also. It is different from the full-size Montero in that it has 4 trim levels and two different engine choices. The ES and LS models have a 3.0-liter V6 while the up-level XLS and Limited models have a larger 3.5-liter engine.

This is a 4-door 5-seater truck that offers a range of luxury fittings in keeping with Mitsubishi's desire to appeal to those looking for a work-oriented, all-terrain-ready beast while also offering a luxurious sedan like limo ride for those who want comfort and performance. Regardless of the choice you make, the Montero Sport is a businesslike vehicle that is equally at home on asphalt or off.

Under the Hood

The Montero Sport ES and LS model's smaller engine is the 3.0-liter V6. A 24-valve overhead cam powerplant with 165 hp at 5250 rpm and 186 lb-ft of torque at 4000, this engine is teamed with a 4-speed automatic transmission. The XLS and Limited models get the larger of the two engines, a 3.5-liter V6. This engine gets 197 hp at 5000 rpm and 223 lb-ft of torque at 3500: a significant increase in power. Both engines get around 17/20 mpg (city/hwy).

All models allow a choice of 2- or all-wheel drive, with the AWD adding a 2-speed transfer case, 4-wheel antilock disk brakes and skid plates. Dual front airbags are standard on all models along with roof rails and a full-size spare tire (235/75R15 on the ES 16 inch on all other models). The LS adds alloy wheels to the ES.

XLS models have standard antilock brakes and the Limited has a limited-slip differential and fog lights as well. With trailer brakes and a Class III hitch, the Montero will tow 5000lb.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

A high level of standard interior amenity is in place on all Montero Sport SUVs. For example, from base ES model on up the following is included: air conditioning, power windows, doors, mirrors, steering, and an AM/FM/CD player.

The Montero Sport LS adds a few key extras as well, on the inside and the outside. Cruise control, remote keyless entry, a split-folding rear seat and a height-adjustable drivers seat are all additional interior amenities while side steps and rear privacy glass add style and function to the exterior.

By the time you get to the Limited model, most of the comfort and luxury bases are covered. For example, leather upholstery, heated front seats, power sunroof, Infinity audio system and a power antenna are all included.

Options packages like the Appearance, Touring or Luxury package allow even more flexibility in style or luxury detailing.
