2003 Mitsubishi Outlander
This year Mitsubishi has introduced a compact sport
utility vehicle. The 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander is a
tall wagon based upon the Lancer sub-compact car. This
car-based platform has resulted in a crossover type
vehicle that has great handling, a fuel-efficient engine,
a large amount of cargo space and, in the end, is an
urban jungle-compatible mover that doesn't mind getting
its feet dirty off the asphalt.
The Outlander comes in LS or XLS trim levels and it
has a strong 4-cyl engine offered with either model.
All-wheel drive (AWD) is available on either trim level.
The target demographic is made up of adventurous types
who needs some cargo space to carry gear or sports equipment
and a powertrain and clearance to get through more than
just the odd pot-hole. The AWD means that the Outlander
is also strong in adverse weather conditions.
Under the Hood
The 2.4-liter overhead cam 4-cyl engine on the Outlander
pumps out a sturdy 140 hp at 5000 rpm and 157 lb-ft
of torque at 2500. The 4-speed Sportronic automatic
transmission with manual shift capability means the
driver can engage the Sportronic system and shift gears
at the touch of finger operated buttons for those circumstances
when a little more control over acceleration is required
or desired. The engine gets 20/25 mpg (city/hwy) when
coupled with this transmission.
All-wheel drive is available on both models as are
dual front airbags. A roof rack and rear spoiler is
standard on the XLS, along with a spot light, fog lights
and rear privacy glass. Antilock brakes are an optional
extra. The full-size spare tire (225/60R16) and a tachometer
add additional standard value to both models.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The Mitsubishi vehicles tend to offer high level of
standard equipped interior amenity and the Outlander
is no exception. The base model LS has air conditioning,
cruise control, power windows, doors, mirrors, steering,
and an AM/FM/CD player. Small details include such styling
subtleties as an analog clock and other items.
The XLS adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote
keyless entry and matched Mitsubishi floor mats.
Options packages like the Appearance, Sun and Sound
or Luxury packages allow even more flexibility in style
or luxury detailing with optional extras like a power
sunroof or leather upholstery.
