2003 Nissan Frontier
Nissan has been an innovator in the compact pickup
truck market for quite a while. Back in 1959, Nissan
created the very first compact pickup, while ten years
later it unleashed a previously unseen ½-ton
compact pickup model. Throughout the years they have
continued this process of defining the segment, most
notably with the Frontier. The crew cab configuration
of the Frontier boasts the longest cargo best in the
class (74.6 inches), while all models round in for 2003
with over a dozen substantial upgrades.
There are a wealth of 2003 Nissan Frontier models to
choose from. The Frontier's body styles range from King
Cab, four-door Frontier Crew Cab and Frontier Crew Cab
Long Bed. Long and short cargo beds are available, while
naturally 2WD and 4WD configurations are offered. The
trim levels unfold as follows: XE, SE, SC and SVE (Super
Value Edition).
Under the Hood
With all sorts of models and sizes to choose from,
manufacturers have spread around an impressive number
of engines for the Frontier line. A 2.4-liter DOHC 4-cylinder
engine capable of producing 143 horsepower and 154 lb-ft
of torque is standard on 2WD King Cab XE models. On
all 4WD models, plus crew cabs with both cargo bed sizes,
a 3.3-liter V6 engine is provided. Producing an increase
in horsepower from last year, it dishes out a total
of 180 horsepower and 202 lb-ft of torque. Manual and
automatic transmissions are both offered.
Available with uplevel SC and SVE models is a supercharged
version of the 3.3-liter V6, which ups the performance
to a class-leading 210 horsepower and 246 lb-ft of torque
(automatic - 231 lb-ft for manuals). Handling is made
simple with standard power-assisted recirculating ball-type
steering, while safety is achieved with 4-wheel antilock
brakes and dual front airbags.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Frontiers provide a nice mix of standard features to
go along with their high performance ability, while
also continuing in the innovative tradition of their
forefathers. One such model that takes the baton and
runs with it is the 2003 Frontier Open Sky, which has
the industry's first-ever power-operated retractable
top in a compact truck. The power-operated top retracts
with the touch of a button to expose the cab to natural
air and light. In addition, the top can open as wide
or as little as desired. Completely retracted, the roof
covers over four square feet.
There are many options packages for 2003, addressing
convenience, performance, supreme comfort and even listening
pleasure. A Leather Package, which includes factory-installed
leather-appointed seats, pop-up sunroof and Vehicle
Security System, is available on all S/C and SE Frontier
King Cab, Frontier Crew Cab and Frontier Crew Cab Long
Bed models. Nothing short of all of this would seem
right with the 2003 Nissan Frontier.
