2003 Nissan Xterra reviews and buying guide.

2003 Nissan Xterra resources:

2003 Nissan Xterra

Nissan's youth-oriented midsize SUV offers three engines, a number of different trim levels, new colors and guaranteed fun all around. Taking a fresh approach to sport-utility vehicle making, Nissan has crafted the Xterra with a noticeable disdain for conventional styling. This is in evidenced in the Xterra's design and the fresh new color selection for 2003: Canteen, Granite, Atomic Orange and Camouflage.

The four-door Xterra seats five inside its newly arranged interior. Though it targets youth, the Xterra doesn't forget about safety. It includes standard dual stage front supplemental airbags with seat belt sensors and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tether for Children) system for child seats. Additional safety features include optional curtain side-impact supplemental airbags. For 2003, the Xterra is offered in three 2WD models - XE, XE-V6 and SE-V6, and two 4WD models - XE-V6 and SE-V6. In addition, there is an S/C (supercharged) model that really loads on the power.

Under the Hood

The entry-level XE model is equipped with 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 143 horsepower. Not surprisingly, V6 models come with a 3.3-liter V6 with 180 horsepower. The top-line S/C model offers a supercharged version of the same engine, able to pump out 210 horsepower. With the exception of the entry-level XE model, which only offers 5-speed manual transmission, all Xterras come with both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic transmission.

Like last year, the 2003 Xterra features a double-wishbone front suspension and dual leaf-spring rear, with stabilizer bars in the front and rear. Power-assisted recirculating ball type steering and 4-wheel antilock brakes are also standard on all models.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Xterra's new interior offers a comfortable ride regardless of the trim level. The XE model can attest to this, as it provides standard air conditioning, power steering, cloth upholstery, front bucket seats, center console, cupholders, split folding rear seat, an AM/FM/CD player, a digital clock, a tachometer, rear defogger and more. One of the impressive features of the SE model is an enhanced 300-watt maximum rating for the Rockford Fosgate-powered 8-speaker audio system with subwoofer and in-dash 6-disc CD changer. Others include leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls, cruise control, power mirrors, windows and door locks and remote keyless entry.

A Sport Package is just one of the many options available. It features limited-slip rear differential, additional auxiliary power outlets, fog lights and front tow hooks.
