2003 Oldsmobile Alero
The 2003 Oldsmobile Alero is a very successful front-wheel
drive compact car that offers good acceleration in the
V6, and has an assortment of different trim levels available
for the vehicle consumer to choose between. It comes
in the 4-door sedan model as well as a 2-door Coupe
and the various versions are the base GS, the GL1, GL2
and GLS: the sedan model.
This car is a good value for money, doesn't skimp on
extras and luxury and is the top seller of the Oldsmobile
brand, which will be phased out in 2004. If you want
one of the last Oldsmobile cars produced, the Alero
would be a good choice.
Under the Hood
The base GS and GL1 models of Alero share the 4-cylinder
dohc 2.2-liter and come standard equipped with a 4-speed
automatic transmission (5-speed manual available). Dual
front airbags and daytime running lights are standard.
The GL1 also comes with fog lights.
Optional on the GL1 and standard on the GL2 and the
GLS is a more powerful 3.4-liter V6 with a 4-speed automatic
transmission to control the significant amount of extra
power. Where the GX and GL1 has 140hp at 5600 rpm, the
V6 has 170 at 4800, an increase in pulling power of
close to 25%. The difference in torque, at 4000 rpm,
is even more marked, with 150 lb-ft compared to 200.
The other big difference between these four models
is that the GL2 and GLS both have 4-wheel antilock disc
brakes, a notable change from last year. The traction
control, rigid sport suspension, 225/50R16 tires and
rear spoiler also contribute to greater control in aggressive
driving situations for those out there with a liking
for performance features.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The standard features on the base GS are quite generous
but a broad range of add-ons is also available in various
options packages. AM/FM/CD, A/C, front bucket seats,
cruise control, tachometer, tilt leather-wrapped steering
wheel, and cloth upholstery are no extra charge. Power
door locks and steering, a theft-deterrent system and
wheel covers are also standard.
The GL1 adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote
keyless entry, powered windows and mirrors and driver's
seat height adjustment. The next major change can be
had with the GLS. This model has all leather upholstery,
floor mats, a 6-way power driver seat and polished alloy
rims to sharpen the exterior styling.
Mix and match the above features or add one of the
major options packages (Sport, Sun and Sound, or Performance
Suspension for additional personalization of your new
Alero.
