2003 Pontiac Grand Am reviews and buying guide.

2003 Pontiac Grand Am resources:

2003 Pontiac Grand Am

The 2003 Pontiac Grand Am is the compact sedan in a line that includes the powerful Grand Prix. However, compact does not equate to boring in regard to the Grand Am. This is a car with five separate trim levels, three separate engines, a great package of performance capabilities and, to top it off, a low sticker price and good fuel economy.

Changes for this year include optional ABS brakes on the low-end SE Model. Options for this year include Satellite Radio (100 channels coast to coast), Monsoon Sound System, power sunroof and leather upholstery. All these mean that you can tailor the Grand Am to suit your needs and pocketbook. But, whether you go for the SE the SE1, SE2, GT or top-level GT1, the Grand Am will surprise you with its power and road-holding agility.

Under the Hood

The Grand AM has a 4-cyl 2.2-liter engine under the hood of the SE. This puts out a respectable 140hp and 150lb-ft of torque. This car is no slouch and, like all the rest, it has dual front airbags. The next engine level up is found in the SE2. This is where the fun really starts. With a V6 pumping out 170 hp and 195lb-ft of torque, this model is almost as fast as the GT editions. The difference is that they have a Ram Air feature on the same engine. It adds 5hp and 10 lb-ft of torque, putting it to over 205lb-ft at 4000rpm: a whole lot of power for a compact car.

Mechanically, the other difference between the GTs and the rest is the standard sport suspension and 4-wheel disk brakes. The SEs have ABS but with drums. All models are front-wheel drive and have 4-speed automatic transmission. The base SE with its 4-cyl has a 5-speed transmission option. Mileage is quite good, considering the power, with 24 to 33 mpg depending on transmission, engine choice and city or highway driving.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The range of interior features is impressive with a good offering at the base level SE. This comes with air conditioning, power steering, cloth upholstery and an AM/FM/CD player along with many other basic features like variable intermittent wipers etc.

At the SE1, cruise control, power windows, door-locks, remote keyless entry and other conveniences add to this list while alloy wheels adorn the exterior. A power driver seat and a leather wrapped steering wheel with radio controls grace the interior of the SE2. while the GT1 model has a power sunroof, Monsoon Stereo system, optional XM satellite radio, a power seat upgrade and unique GT floor mats.
