2003 Subaru Legacy reviews and buying guide.

2003 Subaru Legacy resources:

2003 Subaru Legacy Sedan

The middle incarnation of Subaru engineering is the Legacy series. Larger than the Subaru Impreza but smaller than the Outback, the Legacy is designed to appeal to families and others who demand more than luxury, comfort and typical urban capabilities from their vehicles. They want a car in the driveway that will also serve their family or their own purpose in snow, mud, sand or any other adverse condition that may come along in the course of their day.

The Legacy Sedan is a 4-door with room for 5 adults on an all-wheel-drive platform with a class-superior ground clearance and a smooth but rugged suspension for adverse terrain conditions. It comes in rising trim levels from the base L Sedan through the L Special Edition Sedan, for more luxury amenities, and finishing with the sporty 2.5 GT Sedan that also has the top level of luxury fittings.

Under the Hood

The Legacy has a beefy 2.5-litersohc 4cyl. with 165hp at 5600rpm and 166lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. Teamed with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission, the Legacy gets 21/27mpg (city/hwy).

The 2.5 GT has a limited slip differential and sport suspension to add to its handling capability but all the Legacy models have 4-wheel antilock disc brakes and dual-front airbags as standard equipment.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The real distinction between all the Legacy models is in the different trim levels. The base Legacy S has air conditioning, cruise control and an AM/FM/CD player. Touch of a button features include power mirrors, steering, windows and door locks, and remote keyless entry. The car has cloth upholstery on front bucket seats and a rear bench seat with rear trunk pass-through (sedan). Meanwhile, a digital clock, tachometer, outside-temperature indicator and automatic-off headlights add value.

An upgrade to the Legacy L Special Edition adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel adds an upgrade to 16-inch alloy wheels, wood-grain interior trim, projector beam fog lights and a powermoonroof.

The 2.5 GT has the top level of both performance and luxury. The highlight is leather upholstery but it is accompanied by heated front seats, an 8-way power driver seat, heated power mirrors, AM/FM/weatherband radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, deicing wiper and front-side airbags.

Any of the Legacy models offer a good standard of luxury fittings and maintain the rugged durability expected from and established by Subaru’s brand identity.
