2003 Subaru Legacy Wagon reviews and buying guide.

2003 Subaru Legacy resources:

2003 Subaru Legacy Wagon

The 2003 Subaru Legacy series has a Wagon line with the same three entries as it’s sedan counterpart; the S the L Special Edition and the 2.5 GT, at the top level of both luxury and performance capability. The Legacy models are designed to appeal to families and others who demand more than luxury, comfort and typical urban capabilities from their vehicles.

The Legacy Wagons, with their increased storage space, split-folding rear seats, 2000lb towing capacity and dual power moon-roofs, meet the above criteria in every respect. Any of the Legacy models offer a good standard of luxury fittings and maintain the rugged durability expected from and established by Subaru’s brand identity.

Under the Hood

The Legacy line is powered by a beefy 2.5-litersohc 4cyl. with 165hp at 5600rpm and 166lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. The 5-speed manual transmission is the standard offering but an optional 4-speed automatic transmission with Subaru’s Sportshift feature is available. This feature kicks the car intopowershift mode when the accelerator is used rapidly, that is, when you put the pedal to the metal.

The full-time all-wheel drive system distributes power to front or rear wheels according to the traction needs. This task is accomplished on the manual transmissions with a viscous coupling limited-slip rear differential while the automatics use a Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) system. The Legacy gets from 21 to 27mpg (city/hwy).

The 2.5 GT has a limited slip differential and sport suspension to add to its handling capability but all the Legacy models have 4-wheel antilock disc brakes and dual-front airbags as standard equipment.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Wagons have remarkable cargo carrying versatility due to their various seat configurations and due to the roof rack. With the rear seat down, all the Legacy Wagons have 68.6 cubic feet of carrying capacity. What changes between them are their interior fittings as you rise through the three trim levels.

The base S wagon has a good collection of standard amenities with air conditioning, cruise control, an AM/FM/CD player and a number of “touch of a button features” that include power mirrors, steering, windows and door locks, and remote keyless entry. Cloth upholstery on front bucket seats and rear seat, a digital clock, tachometer, outside-temperature indicator and automatic-off headlights add value at this level.

By the time you rise to the 2.5 GT model, you enjoy a leather-wrapped steering wheel that matches the leather upholstery, wood-grain interior trim, projector beam fog lights and the front and rear powermoonroofs. Not to forget heated front seats, an 8-way power driver seat, heated power mirrors and an AM/FM/weatherband radio with an in-dash 6-disc CD changer, deicing wiper and front-side airbags.
