2003 Subaru Outback Sedan

The 2003 Subaru Outback is an SUV flavored line of cars that offers versatility, ruggedness and luxury fittings. The top dog in the Subaru line, Outback offers more than any other Subaru model, whether you are looking for power, performance capability, off-road design pedigree or sophisticated internal electronics for comfort and safety.

Subaru has made the Outback a versatile offering with nine different all-wheel drive 4-door models: one hatchback, four wagons, three sedans and one passenger car/SUV/pick-up crossover—theBaha. The three wagons that will be described here have the a couple of different engine choices, various interior amenity trim levels and an assortment of performance technologies, including Subaru’s Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system.

The Outback Sedan line includes the Ltd Sedan, the H6-3.0 Sedan, the top-level VDC Sedan and new this year, the oddballBaha.

Under the Hood

The base Outback has a smaller engine than the other two. This 2.5-litersohc 4cyl produces 165hp at 5600rpm and 166lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. It is the same engine that is found in the Subaru Outback Sedan line but this car enjoys the raised suspension and the limited-slip differential that is common throughout the Outback series.

On the other two sedans, the Outback is equipped with the most powerful engine offering in the Subaru stable. This 3.0-liter V6, namesake of the H6-3.0 model, produces 212hp at 6000rpm and 210lb-ft of torque at 4000. It engine comes with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission with Subaru’sSportshift feature.

The top-level models, the VDC andBaha editions, have a number of additional performance enhancements including traction control, antiskid and, like the top-level Outback Sedan models, a Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) system. The Outback models get from 19 to 26mpg (city/hwy).

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Outback is the top of the Subaru line so it is not surprising that they enjoy the highest level of basic amenities. Leather upholstery, for example, is standard on even the Limited edition. Front-side airbags arte also in place at this level, along with the normal assortment of fittings that one would expect, that is, air conditioning, cruise control, power everything, keyless entry and so on.

The next level up, the H6-3.0 adds theOnStar communications system, automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver seat and an audio system upgrade that includes theweatherband radio. At the top, the VDC level, a McIntosh audio system is added that combines with the performance upgrades, for real value. TheBaha adds a small pick-up truck bed instead of a trunk. This model is also distinguished by sporty off-road styling and has a variety of applications, in terms of carrying capacity than the regular sedan models.
