2003 Subaru Outback Sedan reviews and buying guide.

2003 Subaru Outback Sedan resources:

2003 Subaru Outback Wagon

The 2003 Subaru Outback is an SUV flavored line of cars that offers versatility, ruggedness and luxury fittings. This is true of all Subaru models but the Outback, top dog in the Subaru line, offers more power, performance capability, off-road design pedigree and sophisticated internal electronics than the rest.

The Outback is a versatile offering with nine different all-wheel drive 4-door models but the 5-door versions will be described here. Consumers have a choice of either 4-door hatchback/wagon crossover, the Sport, or any of four wagons; the Wagon, the Limited Wagon, the H6-3.0 LL. Bean Edition or the top-level H6-3.0 VDC Wagon.

They have different levels of power or trim levels and at the top-level, feature the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system with its Variable Torque Distribution (VTD)feature.

Under the Hood

The Outback wagons are fitted with either of two engines. The Sport, Wagon and Limited Wagon all feature the smaller 4-cyl 2.5-literpowerplant while the H6 L.L. Bean and VDC models have the larger 3.0-liter V6 engine that is shared by the top level Out back sedans.

The 2.5-litersohc 4cyl produces 165hp at 5600rpm and 166lb-ft of torque at 4000rpm. The 3.0-liter V6, namesake of the H6-3.0 model, produces 212hp at 6000rpm and 210lb-ft of torque at 4000. The 4-cyl engine comes with a either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission with Subaru’sSportshift feature while the 3.0-liter models just come with the latter. All the Outback models enjoy raised suspension and a limited-slip differential.

The VDC system refers to a number of additional performance enhancements including traction control, antiskid and, like the top-level Legacy models, a Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) system. Dual-front airbags and front-side airbags are standard.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

As should be expected from a line of cars that has Crocodile Dundee as the spokesperson, the Subaru Outback is designed for adventurous use. Appropriately it has features that support that use, that is, anOnStar satellite communications system with a level of emergency coverage that you can vary according to your needs as a driver, aweatherband radio system, an outside temperature indicator, deicing wipers, a compass, a sturdy roof rack, and a Class 1 trailer hitch allowing towing up to 2000lbs.

Optional add-ons mean that even more function can be added according to the needs of the consumer.
