2003 Toyota Avalon reviews and buying guide.

2003 Toyota Avalon resources:

2003 Toyota Avalon

The 2003 Toyota Avalon is a four sedan offering to the full-size car class. The top of the Toyota sedan line, the Avalon is an excellent step up for Camry drivers looking to move to a larger and more luxurious vehicle.

The Avalon comes in two versions, the XL and XLS models. They share many things, a respectably powerful engine, the renowned Toyota ethic for quality and value, a solid collection of standard safety equipment and a smooth and quiet driving experience for driver and passengers. New for 2003, a new in-dash satellite navigation system is available on the up-level XLS edition. Rain-sensing wipers are standard.

Under the Hood

A 3.0-liter DOHC V6 engine powers the Avalon pumping out 210 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 220 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures excellent low- and mid-range power for superior maneuverability while a smooth-shifting four-speed electronic automatic transmission is well matched to the engine. The Avalon achieves an EPA fuel mileage rating of 21/29mpg (city/hwy).

The smooth ride on the Avalon results from various innovations including an Active Control Mount for the smooth V6 that helps cancel out engine-source vibration. Four-wheel independent suspension is mounted on front and rear anti-vibration cradle sub-frames. New safety technology in the 2003 Avalon includes multi-stage front airbags and ISO-FIX child-restraint tethers in addition to the usual safety portfolio that includes 4-wheel antilock disc brakes.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The base Avalon XL and the up-level XLS have a few differences. The healthy collection of amenities contained in the XL includes items like air conditioning with dual-zone manual controls, cruise control, and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player.

However, the XLS grade, already approaching luxury car territory, adds rain-sensing wipers, a driver's side electro-chromic auto-dimming mirror and leather-wrapped steering wheel with wood grain-style accents. The new optional DVD navigation system uses a detachable remote control unit that anchors to the left of the gearshift and can be removed to be used by the front or rear passengers. In addition, the XLS adds to this list with automatic climate control and a JBL sound system.

Other optional add-ons include both major packages and stand-alone items with such luxuries as all-leather upholstery, in-dash 6 CD-changers and a power sunroof, not to mention mechanical enhancements like an anti-skid system.
