2003 Toyota Camry reviews and buying guide.

2003 Toyota Camry resources:

2003 Toyota Camry

The 2003 Toyota Camry offers ample amounts of everything sedan buyers want - room, comfort, performance, safety and value – all branded with the benefit of Toyota quality. This is true whether you choose the base LE, sporty SE or up-level luxury XLE editions.

Optional power-adjustable brake and accelerator pedals (with automatic transmission only) allowing all drivers to comfortably position their seats relative to the steering wheel are new features for this year. A remote keyless entry system is now standard on all models while the XLE adds fog lamps to the outside and a 6 CD-changer on the inside, enhancing a JBL 3-in-1 audio system.

Under the Hood

All three Camry grades have a 2.4-liter DOHC 4-cyl engine with Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that ensures excellent low- and mid-range power for superior maneuverability and merging power at highway speeds. It produces 157 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 162 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm.

A four-speed electronic automatic transmission with intelligence (4ECTi) is optional on the LE and SE grades, which come with a five-speed manual transmission. The automatic is standard on the XLE. The intelligence refers to an electronic “grade logic” that selects the proper gear for ascending and descending inclines. One result is smooth shifting up and down the scale but a second by-product is good fuel economy ratings of 23/33mpg (city/hwy).

An alternative engine choice is an overhead cam 3.0-liter V6 that produces 192 hp at 5,300 rpm and 209 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. V6 Camry models require the automatic transmission but still get pretty good mileage with 20/28 mpg (city/hwy). All Camry models are EPA-certified as Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV). Safety isn’t neglected with dual front airbags standard on all grades and 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes fitted on all V6 models.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The three grades of Camry are designed to appeal to the needs of different segments of the population. The base LE offers Toyota value and quality with a respectable collection of amenities including air conditioning, cruise control, height-adjustable driver seat, power mirrors, windows, door locks and steering and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player.

The SE has sporty styling and mechanical upgrades including sport suspension, a rear spoiler, bigger tires and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The XLE is the sedan for those interested in a higher level of luxury. Some highlights are automatic climate control, a JBL AM/FM/cassette with in-dash 6 CD changer and power front seats with lumbar adjustment.

The extensive list of options includes significant mechanical, stylistic and comfort enhancing add-ons.
