2003 Toyota Highlander
Two years ago, the Toyota Highlander joined the Toyota
4Runner as part of a two-vehicle midsize SUV strategy.
The logic behind this was simple. The 4Runner is biased
toward rugged use while the Highlander is for buyers
demanding the image and versatility of an SUV but who
prioritize the ride, handling and comfort of a premium
sedan.
The Highlander is available in six configurations with
two engines and two drive systems. It is based on a
unibody platform with four-wheel independent suspension
that provides a tight, quiet ride as expected in a high-quality
mid-size sedan. A 5-seater, the Highlander combines
a roomy cabin with 38.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind
the rear seat. 2WD front wheel drive models and all-wheel
drive models are available with either a 4-cyl or V6
engine. The Limited Edition adds a high degree of luxury
to the V6 level.
Under the Hood
The four-cylinder Highlander has a 2.4-liter dohc variable
valve timing (VVT-I) engine that produces 155 hp and
163 lb.-ft. of peak torque. The V6 is a 3.0-liter dohc
VVT-i that outshines some larger-displacement competitors
with 220 horsepower and 222 lb.-ft. of peak torque.
Both engines have EPA certification as Low Emission
Vehicles and both are teamed exclusively with a four-speed
electronic automatic transmission. VVT-i ensures an
even spread of power for excellent response at any speed.
Both engines can be teamed with either 2WD or AWD.
The AWD system employs a bevel-gear center differential
with a viscous coupling to divide engine power 50/50
front and rear. This system enables owners of the Highlander
to handle both wet and slippery roads and light-duty
off-highway conditions with confidence.
Standard safety equipment include dual front airbags,
antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and brake assist. Optional
add-ons include front-side airbags, curtain-side airbags
and daytime running lights.
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
The difference between the 4-cyl and the V6 is the
engine. Interior amenities remain the same with air
conditioning, cruise control, AM/FM/CD player, a full
range of power features and many more items to present
an offering that is extensive and generous.
The Limited grade adds significantly to this solid
selection of standards. Highlights of the additional
amenities at the Limited level are items like the JBL
Stereo system, multi-way power seats, automatic climate
control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and smaller
items like remote keyless entry. Options packages include
Preferred, Quick Order, Convenience, Appearance, and
Towing Prep packages. All these are useful ways to tailor
your new vehicle to your own specific needs.
