2003 Toyota Matrix reviews and buying guide.

2003 Toyota Matrix resources:

2003 Toyota Matrix

The 2003 Toyota Matrix is a subcompact 4-door hatchback, almost a tall version of the Toyota Corolla Wagon that was a great car with plenty of room. The Matrix is no exception, offering significant cargo space and successfully competing with the Ford Focus and offering an alternative to the slightly larger but very successful Subaru Forester.

As more people pursue outdoor adventures, gravity sports and kayaking for example, the market has definitely grown for the kinds of vehicles that will accommodate the toys and navigate the rough terrain that is sometimes encountered. The Matrix is available as Standard, XR and XRS models, each with different drive-train, standards and optional add-ons.

Under the Hood

The 1.8-liter 4-cyl, Standard and XR Matrix models come with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission and 130 hp at 6000 rpm, while the AWD versions have only the automatic transmission and 123 hp. The XRS has 180 hp at 7600 rpm and a 6-speed stick shift is offered along with the 4-speed automatic transmission. Both Standard and XR Matrix models have 125 lb-ft of torque at 4200 rpm. In contrast, the XRS has 180 hp and 130 lb-ft of torque at 6800 rpm.

The XR and XRS models have antilock braking systems, the latter with 4-wheel disk brakes, while on the Standard model the ABS brakes are optional.

Dual front airbags are standard but front side airbags are optional add-ons for any of the Matrix models, as are daytime running lights.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Like other Toyotas, the distinctions between the models are similar additional features included with each upgrade.

They all come with the following standard features: AM/FM/CD player, front bucket seats, A/C, rear defogger, variable intermittent wipers, power mirrors and steering, a center console, split-folding rear seat, remote fuel door and trunk release, and tilt steering.

An upgrade to the XR edition adds power door locks, a height-adjustable driver seat, map lights, remote keyless entry, a rear wiper and power windows. The XRS has standard cruise control and an upgrade on the stereo that includes a cassette player.

The optional add-ons includes a wide assortment of luxuries; 16 or 17-inch alloy wheels and theft deterrent upgrades, 115-volt power outlet and even a first-aid kit is available.
