2003 Toyota Tacoma 2WD reviews and buying guide.

2003 Toyota Tacoma 2WD

The 2003 Toyota Tacoma compact pickup is a very successful and highly recommended entry to the truck segment. New for this year, the Tacoma offers standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) and a child restraint system (CRS) (lower anchors have been added to the front passenger seat in standard and Xtracab models and to the rear outboard seats in the Double Cab models for 2003).

Documented industry-leading quality, model versatility and reliability are all reasons why people choose the Tacoma specifically and Toyota, in particular. This year the Tacoma line features 17 model configurations! This is based on three cab types - standard, extended Xtracab with rear jump seats and the four-door Double Cab and different bed lengths. The following details the 2WD rear-wheel drive editions, the basic 4X2, the PreRunner and the S-runner, 2WD truck with specific mechanical capabilities; the former similar to the off-road 4X4, the latter a sport version with a lowered sport suspension and other sporty details like a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Under the Hood

The 2WD Tacoma trucks feature various powertrain configurations. The first is a 142-hp 2.4-liter 4-cyl engine with 160 lb-ft. of torque that powers the 4X2 standard cab. With a 1,480-pound payload capacity this particular model is the best in its class at 200-300 pounds more than its four-cylinder competitors.

On the larger PreRunner, more power is recommended, a larger 2.7-liter DOHC 4-cyl that produces 150-hp and 177 lb-ft. of torque and, finally, a V6. This brawny but smooth DOHC 3.4-liter pumps out 190-hp and puts out 220 lb-ft. of torque. The V6-powered Tacoma models can tow up to 5,000 pounds while four-cylinder models manage up to 3,500 pounds.

For those who want even more power from their V6 models, Toyota dealers offer a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) supercharger kit for the V6 that boosts horsepower to 260. This system carries a full factory warranty and is EPA-certified.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

The Tacomas have a variety of basic features, including such highlights as a cloth upholstery, power steering, and AM/FM radio. However, rather than having rising trim levels, the Tacoma offers a whole selection of major options packages. These enable consumers to detail their Toyota purchase according to their specific needs and desires. The major packages are such as the extensive SR5 Package, the more basic Enhancment Package and others.

This selection of options, like the Tacoma itself, is a wide ranging offering that will satisfy most individual needs.
