2003 Toyota Tacoma 4WD reviews and buying guide.

2003 Toyota Tacoma 4WD resources:

2003 Toyota Tacoma 4WD

The 2003 Tacoma 4WD trucks are available in a variety of types. A base regular cab 2-seater with a 2.7-liter 4-cyl engine sits at one end of the scale. At the other, the 4-door 4-seater Double Cab has a 3.4-liter V6 with far more power, reflective of the need to accommodate the added hardware and the 5 adult passengers inside. Finally, for those who require even more power, a Toyota Racing Development (TRD) supercharger kit is available for the V6 that boosts horsepower to 260.

In the middle, the XtraCab has a choice of either engine, depending on whether power or fuel efficiency is your priority. One factor is consistent throughout the 4WD Tacoma line and that is the mechanical capability for off-road or rugged terrain conditions. Raised suspension, skid plates, a rigorously tuned transmission and plenty of other standard details combine with an assortment of available optional additions to make for a credible and sturdy addition to the 4WD truck sector.
New for this year, the Tacoma offers standard four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) and a child restraint system (CRS) (lower anchors have been added to the front passenger seat in standard and Xtracab models and to the rear outboard seats in the Double Cab models for 2003).

Under the Hood

The sturdy 4-cyl engine available for the 4WD Tacoma Base regular Cab and the larger XtraCab is a DOHC 2.7-liter that produces 150-hp and 177 lb-ft. of torque. Optional on the XtraCab and standard on the Double Cab is a brawny but smooth DOHC 3.4-liter capable of pumping out 190-hp and 220 lb-ft. of torque. The V6-powered Tacoma models can tow up to 5,000 pounds while four-cylinder models manage up to 3,500 pounds. The TRD supercharger kit for the V6 mentioned above that boosts horsepower to 260 is an EPA-certified system that carries a full factory warranty.

But, the Tacoma's most important mechanical capability is not engine power. Off-road capability comes from a variety of factors. Standard features include a double wishbone coil-spring front suspension and leaf spring rear suspension with staggered gas-filled shock absorbers for secure axle control. Skid plates, tow hooks, 2-speed transfer case, manually locking hubs, mud guards and plenty of ground clearance are all also standard Tacoma equipment.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

A variety of basic features include such highlights as cloth upholstery, power steering, and an AM/FM radio. However, rather than having rising trim levels, the Tacoma offers a whole selection of major options packages. These enable consumers to detail their Toyota purchase according to their specific needs and desires. The major packages are such as the extensive SR5 Package, the more basic Enhancment Package and others.

The selection of options, like the Tacoma itself, is wide ranging and will satisfy most individual needs.
