2003 Toyota Tundra
The 2003 Toyota Tundra is this company's entry to the
full-size pick-up segment. 2003 has seen the arrival
of a sporty-looking flared-fender StepSide Access Cab
model, freshened front styling and upgraded trim. However,
this is just one example of the Tundra pickup line,
which is available in 15 configurations comprising two
cab styles (Regular and Access Cab), two engines (3.4-liter
V6 and 4.7-liter i-Force V8), 2x4 and 4x4, two bed lengths
(98-inches for regular and 75-inches for Access Cab
models).
One thing is consistent through all three model grades
(Base, SR5 and Limited) and that is Toyota's reputation
for rugged quality and reliability. The 4x4 models are
available only as SR5 and Limited grades.
Under the Hood
The SR5 V8 and the Limited models are powered by a
4.7-liter i-Force V8, which produces 240 hp and 315
lbs.-ft of torque. The i-Force V8 runs on regular-grade
gasoline and is ULEV-certified (ultra-low emission vehicle).
It is equipped with Toyota Direct Ignition and sequential
fuel injection and rewards the driver and occupants
with quick response and super-low NVH (noise, vibration
and harshness) characteristics.
The Base and SR5 V6 models share a 3.4-liter DOHC V6
engine that produces 190 hp and 220 lb.-ft. of peak
torque. The V6 engine comes with a five-speed manual
transmission but a smooth-shifting, four-speed electronically
controlled automatic transmission is optional (standard
with the V8).
Performance specifications are very impressive with
this big pick-up, especially with the standard equipped
new Towing Package that includes a Class IV tow hitch,
a seven-pin connector with converter, a 130-amp alternator,
and a supplemental transmission oil cooler. The Tundra
offers up to a 1,875-pound payload capacity (V8 2WD
Access Cab SR5) and up to 7,200-pound towing capacity
(V8 4x4 regular cab).
Standard Features, Options Packages and Style
Exterior and interior styling refinements distinguish
the 2003 Tundra with a tougher look up front featuring
a new, larger grill that extends into the upper section
of the bumper. Interior amenities range from the businesslike
selection of standard features at the Base level right
up through the SR5 and luxurious Limited trim levels.
Base models come equipped with cloth upholstery on bench
seating and an AM/FM/CD player, among other basics.
SR5 models add air conditioning, cruise control, and
on the Access Cab, rear-hinged rear doors and a split
folding rear seat. The top-line Limited models add convenience
details such as the new steering wheel audio controls
switch that accompanies the 6CD changer and a new power
sliding rear window.
Options and major options packages allow Tundra buyers
to detail their new truck to their specific needs or
desires with items like the Leather Upholstery Package,
Weather Package or Off-road package.
