2003 VW Golf reviews and buying guide.

2003 VW Golf resources:

2003 VW Golf

Exceptional handling, steady performance and the traditional safety package of a VW are all standard with the 2003 VW Golf. Rolling off the line for another year of adventure, the Golf is among the elite in terms of subcompact cars. It zips around town or on the highway with a confidence that is contagious.

The 2003 VW Golf is offered in a two-door hatchback body and a four-door hatchback body. The model lineup is both impressive and varied. There is a TDI model that features a turbocharged engine, as well as GL and GLS trim levels. Four-doorGolfs offer all three variations, while two-doors do not come in the GLS trim.

Under the Hood

The Golf has always packed a big punch for its diminutive package. The 2003 model is no different. GL and GLS models are equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine capable of 115 horsepower and 122 lb-ft of torque. TDI models are ultra-efficient, boasting some of the best fuel ratings you’ll see in 2003. Their engine is 1.9-liter, in-line, turbo-charged direct injection 4-cylinder diesel engine, generating 90 horsepower and 149 lb-ft of torque. 5-speed manual transmission is standard; 4-speed automatic optional. For fuel economy, the TDI has a ridiculous rating of 42/49 mpg (city/hwy) for manuals, 34/45 mpg (city/hwy) for automatics. Needless to say, they’re ecologically aware vehicles.

The 2003 VW Golf has power assisted rack-and-pinion steering for smooth driver feel. Front and rear gas shock absorbers are just part of the suspension system that smothers the bumps on the road. For safety, the Golf has dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes.

Standard Features, Options Packages and Style

Both two-door and four-doorGolfs seat five passengers with ease. Comfort is a continuing staple of the Golf series, as 2003 sees even more standard amenities added to the list. All 2003 Golf models come with air conditioning, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, height-adjustable front bucket seats, a center console, cupholders, heated power mirrors, power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, an AM/FM/cassette/CD player, a digital clock, map lights, illuminated visor mirrors, a rear defogger and more.

The options list is varied and thorough, addressing both comfort and performance. With or without add-ons, the 2003 Golf is yet another strong entry in the VW family.
